(upbeat music) - So, many times in the fall, people find that their zucchinis have gotten way overgrown in their garden.
So we found a creative way of using zucchinis as cars.
(crowd cheering and applauding) So the only rule is that your zucchini has to have wheels.
And then, we have different categories.
This one would be in the pickle-size category.
There's a medium category, and then there's a whopping grand category, which has some skateboards as competition.
And then we have best decorated.
(crowd cheering and applauding) - [Announcer] That's a decoration bonanza with the banners.
- [Judge] Great job, everybody, decorating today.
- [Announcer] We are ready to zucchini.
(trumpet blaring) The fifth annual Merrymeeting Arts celebrate Bowdoinham zucchini race.
(trumpet blaring) Find your car.
You can go right up the ramp.
Great job, everybody.
(trumpet blaring) (trumpet blaring) All right, Mabel, you ready?
Everybody ready?
All right, three, two, one, zucchini!
- [Crowd] Two, one, zucchini!
(crowd cheering) - [Announcer] Right in tow.
- [Crowd] Oh!
- [Announcer] Oh!
- Zucchini!
- [Crowd] Zucchini!
(crowd cheering) - [Announcer] Oh, oh, oh, oh!
- [Lisa] With the help of many volunteers and the Merrymeeting Arts Center, we've been able to do this every year and it grows and gets bigger and more fun.
- You got farming, you got a skate park, you got community.
It's kind of the perfect metaphor for the community, as far as I'm concerned.
We love it.
And the zucchinis were donated by Blue Bell Farm.
Thank you, Dave.
- We have a lot of farmers in this area.
You don't dare leave your car open or unlocked because, if you do, you're definitely gonna find a few zucchinis in the back seat.
(trumpet blaring) - [Announcer] Take your marks.
Three, two, one, zucchini!
- [Crowd] Two, one, zucchini!
(crowd cheering) (announcer whooping) - So much of the town comes out and there are just so many ways that people participate and so many things to enjoy and everybody laughs and everybody wins.
And I wouldn't miss it for the world.
It is just incredibly irresistible, joyful, good fun.
- [Crowd] Zucchini!
- [Announcer] Zucchini!
(upbeat music) Oh, no!
(crowd cheering and applauding) There he is.
This is for the grand champion.
Three, two, one, zucchini!
- [Crowd] Three, two, one, zucchini!
(trumpet blaring) (crowd cheering) (crowd cheering) (upbeat music) (gentle music) (mouse clicking) (gentle music)
