Oh, there's nothing like summertime here in the state of Maine.

And one of the highlights of summer in Maine every single year is the Maine Shrine Lobster Bowl classic this year being done for the 36th time.

We're here at Don Roofield here in Lewiston, Maine.

East meets west here on Maine Public.

I'm Rob Kennedy along with Rob Munzing and Jack Webb.

You guys have played in this game.

You're coached in this game, Rob Munsing.

I'm the only one who hasn't been involved in this game from a player or coach's standpoint.

So you guys know more than I would what's going through the heads of the players right now and what this whole week experience is all about.

Well, you talk summer.

I've been saying Merry Christmas to everybody.

This is Christmas in July.

This whole week is just fantastic.

The combination today, but what a great week leading up to this with the kids at camp, up at Foxcroft Academy, having a great hospitality up there and just a fantastic week.

As you said, I got to coach in this game.

It's a fantastic week.

Yeah.

And I defer to the legend in Rob Munsing, right?

But I will say, as someone who played, you know, the latest, right?

I was 2018.

It's making me feel old, but it wasn't too long ago.

You get dropped off at Foxcrofts Academy on a Sunday, you don't know what to expect, right?

You're thinking three-day practices, you're all of a sudden teammates with these guys you were rivals with, talking crap to you honestly might've hated in high school.

Oh yeah.

You blink, they're your best friends and all of a sudden you're here on Saturday.

And this is what it's all about right here, getting to take the field with those foes who have now became friends and lifelong teammates.

We do end up to media day on Tuesday and Jack Webb had the opportunity to talk to many people up there, including the West head coach Joel Stone.

Yeah, Coach Stone, he got away from the game as athletic director for 10 years and he's so grateful to be back involved, not just in high school football, but especially here at the Main Trine Lobster Bowl Classic.

Coach Stone, you said you haven't been a part of this game for a decade.

Yep.

What brought you back?

Well, I took a career change.

I became an athletic director.

So I had to step away and just run the defense and so forth.

So just that's takes a lot of time out of your life.

So what brought me back was just the reality of I, I knew I missed it.

Had an opportunity to be here with some of my kids and it's just a great week, you know?

And you'll see me smiling about it all the time because it's just, you know, you know about it, you've done it, but then you forget about it and you come back to it.

And it's just it's, it's just one of the greatest things you can be a part of in this game of football in the state of Maine.

You know, when you say you come back to it, the emotions, the feelings that come with that, can you bring us through that and what are those?

I mean, for me, I think it's many levels personally, and I hope the kids get to experience this too.

You know, when you play in the game like I said earlier, you, you had an opportunity to meet some of the kids that you were impacting.

It was impact.

I was, I was going to go to the military and decided to go back a different direction with education and being able to coach just because it influenced me that much that I, I could see that, you know, helping kids meant a lot is what I'm trying to say.

So I mean, you know, that, that always rings true to me whether I'm part of this game or watching it from afar.

I always think about those things.

But then you start to, you know, one of my greatest friends is Dan O'Connell and, you know, we got to know each other through this game.

You know, so it just brought us together.

There's, there's just a lot of different levels that go on that make it even more special personally.

But then the larger level obviously is just what we're doing for the cause.

And, and I, and I think I think the Shriners do an excellent job of getting that through the kids so they understand it.

When you get approached to be head coach, what are those motions like?

What are the feelings like?

What was the honor?

You know, I mean, well, I mean, it starts with the class, with classification, so I don't feel totally special, but I mean, the reality is it was D's turn.

And then when they, you know, when, when you get approached, you know, it makes you feel proud.

You know what I mean?

Someone's trusting you to be able to, to run the ship for a week and make sure everything comes together and go smoothly so we can pull the game off as well as put a game on.

So pride, I mean, would be the first thing that comes to mind, but also just it's an honor.

It's, it's a privilege to be here and, and we're very, we're very thankful to be able to have it.

Coach, we're excited to watch your boys Saturday.

They're Ready?

They're, they're real ready.

I, I think I think you're going to be real, real excited to see, watch these guys play.

We have some explosive guys that are, are we're trying to keep them peeled back right now, so they're ready for Saturday.

You know, my coach Intergreen actually said, you know, these guys are like a bunch of woodpeckers in a petrified forest and they just, you know, they're just staying busy and they're going and they're chomping at the bit and, you know, it's, it's going to be a good game.

And one thing Coach Toten talked about, he's facing a good friend of his and Coach O'Connell from John Babs.

They met back in 2008, played against each other as he was talking about in the 2008 State Championship, won by John Babbs that year.

But that game plus coaching together in the lobster ball really kind of brought these coaches together.

I know Coach Munzing, you can speak about this being involved in this, just the fraternity the coaches have throughout the state.

I know it's war during the 40, 48 minutes of of game time between the lines.

But once you get off that field, you guys have so much in common.

And this is really a chance for coaches to really do a lot of bonding, whether it's veteran coaches, new young coaches, what have you.

Well, absolutely right.

The, one of the highlights of my coaching career when I was at Gardner was becoming a coach in the lobster ball.

You, you get to be with with your friends and foals.

Mostly they become friends.

You share a lot of information back and forth, particularly with the young coaches.

I remember Tommy Bertram, was a young coach and now at MCI and he told me a couple of years ago, he said, "Hey, coach, I picked up a great tip from you during our lobster ball week there when you were a veteran coach."

I had the opportunity to coach my two of my three sons.

All three sons played in the lobster ball.

I was very fortunate to have that happen.

And the shot you're seeing is from the 04 game when I was actually out of coaching for five years, came back in and I got to coach my son Nate, who I'd missed out on coaching.

And I got to coach him that week.

It was a special week for me, bonding with my sons being able to be in this game.

And one of the highlights for me was, as most people know, if you follow the history of this game, the West dominated for the first 10 years of the game.

And it wasn't until the 1999 game that the East won.

And I was with Bob Sinclair was head coach of that.

And we got the first East win.

So that was fantastic, Rob.

And just so many great memories from that week.

Unfortunately, some of the people that passed on, Dick Levitt was my bunk mate and he would keep me in stitches for most of the night.

I don't think we slept all week.

And you talked about too, getting to coach your sons in the game.

That's happening again this year.

And Jack, you got to talk to Coach Dan O'Connell, who was really been a fixture in this game with his son since his son was literally born.

Yeah.

I've been so lucky to be in Bangor, right covering sports up there, getting to know Dan O'Connell, one of the best humans we have in the state of Maine in terms of athletics, right?

And then his son pops out as a spinning image, right?

He has the same spirit, same energy.

And it's just an incredible story that we've got to interview.

We talked with Dan and Matt to hear what it's like for them to finally get together in their high school football careers.

The O'Connell Boys, Father, Dan, son, Matt.

I mean, first off, it's honored to be here with you both in experiencing this moment.

I want to talk to you first, Dan, just about, you've probably been dreaming about this since you started, you know, work with the Shrine Lobster Bowl 18 years ago.

Yeah.

You know, what is it like to finally be here in this week with your son?

Well, it's unbelievable.

Literally unbelievable.

When Matthew was born, I can remember my mother saying, "God, help us if he doesn't play football."

And it had never entered my mind.

And two months after he was born, he was on the porch at Hebron getting fed while I was talking to Butch Arthurs who gave me an opportunity to be a part of this.

And, and, and the coaches were meeting Matthew for the first time and I had only met him two months before.

It kind of gives me chills to think about how his experience and our experience together has kind of transformed over the years, right?

He, he was there on that first day and then for the first three or four years, he, he was sad to see me go.

And then from about five to freshman year, he was here every year.

He was excited to, to meet players like you and be in awe of you as you walked in or hit me at the lunch table and say, "Who's that guy?"

That happened.

And so now here we are after his high school career with this opportunity that we always kind of talked about, but we always knew not everybody gets to play in it.

And he's worked his way here, he's earned it.

And now it's just such a special honor to be able to do it with him.

Now for you, I just want to ask you, he talked about all those experiences you had.

What's it like for you to finally be a part of the game?

You know, just, just being around it.

You know, I've been through camp, like I've walked through with guys, I've been to practice.

So it's kind of surreal.

It's kind of full circle.

And I, it's a big advantage.

I've been, been to the dorms.

I know where stuff is.

I've been to practice.

You know three days isn't a huge advantage.

I got to still get going, but - Oh Boy.

Just being around it, being around the guys and meeting new people is just, it's been full circle and it's been a great time.

He knows where the snack is atnight too, right?

100%.

100%.

And he Knows when the schedule is he's got to be.

He's corrected me.

Trained.

Dad, Lunch at 11:30, not 11:00.

Okay.

Thanks, buddy.

Been doing it for years.

A question for both.

You haven't coached him since what?

Pop Warner days, right?

Yeah, right.

And since you, what is this like for you now to be able to coach him up and, and maybe you've seen some stuff from the, from the stands, right?

Over the year.

But now you got hands on, what's it like to coach him?

It's, It's, it's great.

And I, we've had that connection, right?

I've been very fortunate with the Bangor High School football staff to support us and to be able to watch film together.

I, I, I do have to say I've tried to stay away from correcting him as a football player and let his coaches do that.

I've tried to coach him up in life.

Matthew is a, he's a great kid.

He makes great decisions.

He works hard.

He's a great football player, but more than that, he's a great student athlete and people seem to be drawn to him.

That's all because of his mother.

Thankfully she has put up with us through all the football nonsense, right?

Football seems to take over any conversation we're in and she deals with it so well.

And then certainly his younger sister, Ella, who's standing, who actually is going to come visit here tonight and stay tomorrow and kind of take over that platform for him.

They're like every other kid.

They fight like cats and dogs, but they love each other and he's really good to her.

So we're really lucky that this game of football has been created a relationship for the two of us, but for our whole family and both our John Babs and Bangalore communities.

It's awesome.

It's really awesome.

Madio, you're lucky enough to have, to have one of the best right as your father, but it is your father at the end of the day.

You want to kill him yet or no?

Not, not yet.

I bet Thursday I'll be a little agitated, but for right now it's, he's Coach O and he's not dead until Saturday.

So just, I'm just going to work hard and do what he says.

And then if he agitates me a little bit, I'll hold it in, but we'll see.

I don't say a name.

But you're Looking right at me.

That's exactly what we were talking about too, as far as the emotional aspect.

You kind of see that come out of Coach O'Connell, when he was talking about that.

Main High School sports has always been about community and family even more so.

Oh, there's no question about it.

This is a big week for all the families that have kids involved.

The cheerleaders, the players, the shriners themselves.

It's just a wonderful community week.

And we're here to celebrate that today.

And I, I just want to compliment Jack on that interview.

That was fantastic.

I'm glad you didn't go with mini me because that wouldn't have worked.

It's not Mini.

No mini There.

And I mean, when you're working with the O'Connells, they make it so easy.

And that made me emotional, Rob.

I was curious, I mean, you're watching that.

Yeah.

Probably reliving some stuff from you.

What popped up in your head as you're watching that?

At the end of the game that we won in 1999, I was up in the press box, talking to Coach Haley, who was a defensive coordinator at the time, God rest his soul.

And the, the game was in hand.

I came sprinting down out of the press box and I get to the sidelines.

I was so excited.

I was looking for Patrick, but he was on the field still.

And the first person I saw was Dick Levitt.

And I went sprinting towards Dick and I jumped right on his back.

Now, if you know Dick, he'd gone through some physical trouble times.

I knocked him right down on the ground.

And he said, "Are you crazy?"

And I said, "I think so. "

And that's what I remember doing knocking.

He, he kidded me about that till the day he died.

And one thing about this game too, it's an exhibition game.

There's nothing but pride on the line here, but don't tell that to the players.

Once this whistle starts, they were talking about it at Media Day.

They can't wait to hit somebody in an oposite color jersey.

Once this game starts, it's football.

Whether or not there's a trophy on the line doesn't matter.

Yeah.

And there'll be some kid that we haven't even talked about or though about all week who will step up and you'll go, "Oh my God."

Don't forget, these kids are the best kids on their teams.

And you know, even though you may not have had an award winner or something like that, some kids going to set up up.

I remember Ryan Beanerster from Gardner a couple of years ago in a game that we did, caught two touchdown passes, got his team the west back in the game.

And everybody said, "Who's that kid?"

Well, he went up to Husson and he was an all star up at Husson.

Yeah.

And it's personal.

Remember, the bonding is on the east and west separately until this game's over.

You're in the fraternity after the game, but it, it's personal.

And I mean, you can tell by those packages the viewers are in good hands right here with Maine public.

I mean, this is unbelievable.

I'm so excited for today.

One Thing about this game as well is that there's so many festivities that lead up to the contest.

We're glad to be able to have the cameras here to be able to show all those to you.

Today's pregame procession is led by Bill Jennings.

Bill was a patient of the Shriners Hospital back in the 1950s.

And in 1955, he became a National Easter Seal patient.

On October 11th, 2005, Bill was awarded his lifetime certificate and Cora Fez for sharing how Shriners Hospitals saved his life.

At the time, Bill had the honor of meeting President Dwight D. Eisenhower in the Oval Office as part of the Easter Seals campaign and was the 1955 National Patient for Easterseals.

Hello everyone.

Thank you so much for being out here tonight.

This is an amazing event and it's going to help thousands of children.

We are so blessed in New England to be able to have two facilities to support thousands of childrens across New England and New York.

I am thrilled to say that regardless of who wins tonight, you all have already won.

You all are supporting so many, including my beautiful little girl holding that flag over there.

And I am just beyond shocked at how well this particular class has really done.

Ooh, sorry, ran a little bit.

Ultimately our two facilities truly take care of all of what we care for in Shriners Children's.

Between Boston who takes care of Burns and Cleflip and Palate.

And then in Springfield, we take care of orthopedic care, neuromuscular, fracture care, sports injury, urology.

And we are the sole pediatric rehabilitation services in a 50 mile radius.

It's a 90, I'm sorry, 90 cents to every dollar goes directly to patient care.

Over 70% of our families in Springfield require some form of financial assistance.

And I just want to personally say this little girl can walk without pain because of what we do.

This is the greatest philanthropy and the greatest healthcare we have in the world.

We have physically 20 facilities with two more popping up in the, in the country this year.

And we also have 159 outreach clinics and hospitals and so forth in the world.

So we are growing.

We are here and we are here because of all of you.

All the money raised is going to help thousands of children.

We have our vision is in 2035 in a 10 year span to see more children in more places all because of each and every one of you.

I know one thing Rob Kennedy, I'm going to go right on record here saying that in their future, Joe Hayden at 350 pounds, Maddox McMahon at 280, Josh Wolford's at 250, Matt O'Connell at 290, and Brody King Jones at 285 will never have a future in the corporate in these cars.

They're going to have to have another job because they're not getting in those cars.

It's a whirlwind week for these players and they must feel like they just checked into Foxhoft Academy last Sunday to get things going.

You know exactly what it's like.

Well, all the anticipation.

It's a long pre-game for the players.

They come out early, they stretch, and then all the popping circumstance.

I'll tell you one thing, they are chomping and ready to play football right here and we're going to have an outstanding game here.

Weather's going to play a factor, Rob, with that rain coming in and that will factor in a little bit.

We'll be able to see how heavy the rain becomes.

You haven't seen that in a whlebster bowl.

At least since we started the game at seven o'clock back in the day about 15 years ago.

Those always seem to be disrupted by thunderstorms.

You wouldn't get off the field at Waterhouse and Bitterford until about midnight.

Hopefully we won't have that happen today.

I Remember one of the games on the Thornton Academy back when Munson Media was streaming this game.

It was 98 degrees to start the game and well over 100 degrees on the field.

And the trainers did an outstanding job in that game as they do every single year of making sure the kids are taken care of.

Yeah, coaches will tell you kick game is one third of the game, but when you have 17 practices, it's hard really to polish the kick game.

And we see a lot of a chunk expulsive plays in the kick game over the years, Rob.

If you're looking at the scoreboard and see the time, 14:53, that's not a mistake.

The main trying lodge ball goes with 15 minute quarters, unlike the usual 12 in Maine State High School football.

Good idea to do have those extra 12 minutes of action to get more players into the game that way.

Absolutely.

And plus these kids are beyond high school so they're in the collegiate a lot of them going on.

We'll talk about where some of these players are going.

Trey Walker, for example, the quarterback to start things off for the west.

Number three, he's headed to McGill to play football up in Canada.

One play to start things off and trying to spin back Connor Ayu.

He is met in the back field by a whole bunch of red.

Well, one of the things in this game folks at home, you are limited offensively to play a 4-3 front.

And we'll talk more about that as the game unfolds.

That's as far as he'll get a third down and five coming up for the west.

So a four-three front and the offense has to share their scheme with the opposing team so you have an idea because you don't have a lot of time and there's no film on there.

We've often seen a slow stop to these games, Rob, and then the, the points will come in a bunch.

The field commission to be a little slippery.

So they slowed things down a little bit just to make sure the safety of the athletes down there was paramount and slowed things down a little bit, but still a great routine by these cheerleaders and a tremendous shot by our camera crew at the end.

So they do it for the east now.

So we had a chance to go up to Fox North Academy earlier on this week for media day.

And of course, these players work very hard raising funds.

The totals are really astounding.

We'll talk a little bit more about that, but Jack Webb had a chance to sit down with two of the top fundraisers, both playing for the East.

Let's bring that to you right now.

I'm here with the top two fundraisers from this entire event, right?

Can you guys introduce yourselves for us?

Yeah, I'm Dawson Sukforth, Bucksport High School.

I'm Logan Vigu, Madomic Valley High School.

And since you are the top fundraisers, we got to brag a little bit about how much money you guys have raised.

What was your number?

Just a little over 24,000.

Yo?

26,000.

I mean, that is truly unbelievable.

I don't think you guys even realized what you've done for this cause.

And first I want to talk about the fundraising efforts, right?

What was that like going out there?

Was there a surprise donation?

How did you guys raise that much money?

Yeah, I mean set up a lot of fundraisers in, in the town and just the community comes together in Bucksport and you set those fundraisers up and it, it really, it wasn't, wasn't too bad, you know, with the community's efforts and all that stuff.

Yeah.

So I'm from a smaller town.

It's like Washington.

And the lodge there was really helpful in fundraising.

We organized a spaghetti dinner and some other activities like that.

And they were really helpful in that and also in their contribution.

But also just getting out there to different businesses because you'd be surprised how many businesses are willing to help for a good cause.

I mean, what did you guys learn from these fundraising efforts, right?

I'm sure you kind of go into it just hope and pray and write.

And maybe you know some people are going to raise money, but to have your community rally around you in this cause like that, just what did that mean to you?

What'd you learn from it?

It meant a lot to me, you know, just seeing the community all come together and how, how much they support the kids that, that need help and stuff like that.

And then what, what really surprised me was the bus - how the businesses will give you donations, you know, and what, what you can do with fundraising.

It's pretty cool.

Yeah, for sure.

It meant a huge amount just to get the opportunity to raise money for these people that might not be able to and like give them a, a chance when they don't get the chance to like play this game.

And it's surprising like how many people have connections.

Like I met one owner that his kid was impacted had to have emergency surgery when he was younger.

And met multiple owners that had played in the lobster bowl in previous years and it's just great to make those connections.

Well, I hope you guys realize the incredible thing you've done.

How important and how personal were the fundraising efforts?

So the fundraising, raising ef... Had events for 14 years since I was about four years old.

That's incredible.

And just what went into it?

A lot of community going out in the community, shaking hands and, and introducing yourself to people?

I just, you have to go around and make sure you know people and you talk to people and never, never think you don't have enough people because you can always find someone.

You can find people at work, you can find people in the community.

Always people out there.

He's from Adomic Valley in Waterboro.

Dawson Sukerforth and Busk Sport, $24,000.

And of course Elsworth's Lilly Alley we just talked to.

$10,000 overall.

And I think it really brings home the point once again, these are not big towns that raise that 50,000 plus dollars.

They're all small main towns and it just drives home the point of just how important and how great these main communities are as far as supporting their athletes and supporting the Shriners.

Yeah, exactly what we said at the opening in the pregame, Rob, when we talked about this is a community event and communities sponsor their kids.

And there's nothing like small town main communities getting, getting backing their athletes.

And we, we see it every single year.

Every year I talked to Joe Hursam, who I've known since he was a little kid.

He was a former student of mine at at Gardner.

And now he's the president of the the game following the great legacy of his dad.

And I say every year, Joe, I said, geez, how are you going to top it?

He goes, I don't know, but we do.

Every single year we seem to do that.

And it's a, it's a credit to the community's credit to this game.

And you saw it the Imperial from the United States is here.

You know, he's top dog.

And he said, I want to go to Maine.

I want to see that game.

And it's, it's because of what they've done with this game and this great state that we have.

And congratulations to everybody that's been involved in this game since the very first game, 1990.

As I said you know, I had the honor of for many years as a head coach nominating players of this game and, and going to the games and seeing my players play, got to coach in it.

And every single year it's gotten better and better and better in really the fundraising aspect of it.

And a large part of that, Rob, it's, it's because the kids are social media savvy and they're able to tap into this online fundraising.

And you know, Greg Glynn from Pliable has come in his second year involved in the game and Joe just couldn't say enough good things about it.

Brian Robbins as well about how, how big a step that has been in this game to, to bring Greg in.

And Greg, as we know, because we work with Greg a lot, has been just a, a tremendous asset to the the shrine in raising funding for this game.

And every year we ad something.

We got live stats with Lucas this year.

That's a new thing.

We've got Maine public sports doing the game this year for the first time.

You know, and I, I, I feel like a godfather in a sense, you know, of this game, Rob, you know, I go all the way back to the very beginning and for years, you know, I, and I coached a couple times in it and did the production for Munzi Media.

And I'm just tickled to see how it's evolved.

Well, a game like this, you know, just everybody three points at halftime.

No surprise the halftime stats are pretty close between the east and the west.

The only difference really you see, the rushing on the passing yards is the difference, but total yards overall, not too far off.

It's just a three point difference in this game.

Yeah.

No turnovers, but there was a fumble into the end zone.

So I, I think that, you know, that, that's going to count as a, as a touchback.

And you know, that, that really turned the tide because it looks like the east was going to step it in.

You know, they were inside the three yard line there and they're not making the touchdown there, turn it over.

West came down to their credit when 80 yards get the score by Turner on the pass, the extra point good to Turner and there we go.

16, 13, we've got ourselves for second half shaping up.

And so we'll turn over to Toby Nelson Cora Cares Scholarship Committee Chairman.

We are giving out one $500 scholarship this year.

We give preference to those entering a medical field of study and have a parent or relative involved in masonry and/or the shrine.

This year we had 14 applicants, eight of which contain both our preferences.

This year's recipient is Lauren Jordan from North Berwick.

Lauren has a GPA of 4.39 and is ranked first in her class.

Her plan is to get a degree in biology, then attend medical school to become a doctor.

She has a long list of extracurricular activities and awards.

I'll name just a few.

Valedictorian of her class, member of both national and French honor societies, captain of her soccer team, high school band member, certified scuba diver, certified nursing assistants, and she volunteers at York Hospital.

And the list goes on.

Lauren, I'm pleased to present this scholarship to you from Cora Shriners.

Congratulations.

Tatum Doucette overall has over a hundred yards total offense for the east, 91 yards on the ground at 11 carries.

30 yards four for four through the air.

Mike Haley, of course, you know very, very well.

I did as well, but Coach Haley honors individuals for their service and dedication to our game.

And Coach Haley is one of those figures in Maine High School football who was very, very missed.

I don't, I don't throw that around lightly, Rob.

He certainly was.

And I had the honor of coaching with Mike in the 1999 game.

He was a defensive coordinator in that game and just a great ambassador for the game of football here in the state of Maine for all his years.

And unfortunately we lost him.

He was a great football player at the University of Maine, baseball as well.

Just a great, great guy and did a lot for the game of football here in the state.

And he's a broadcaster as well.

Jumped into the broadcast after he was done coaching.

Worked a lot with Coach Dave Wing, who I believe is watching today as well.

Coach Wing at Oak Hill and other places too.

Couple legends of the booth at the same time.

The only problem with Coach Wing and Coach Haley in the booth at the same time, they both had so much football knowledge and so many stories to tell that sometimes that would be the best part of the game, be listening to those stories overall even more than the game action they were calling.

Two great football guys right there.

One thing about this game too is we talk about coaches overall.

We mentioned this at the pregame as well.

You get kind of a who's who of coaches and not just like the, the well established names, but some of the younger coaches as well.

You know, Sam Johnson's up here in the booth for Westbrook doing kind of the eye in the sky here.

And one of the younger coaches in the state of Maine, of course, he's already got himself a ring with the Blue Blazes last year.

Yeah.

But you also have Kevin Cooper, who I heard sang karaoke this week.

I forget which one.

I heard.

The Brians he did, Zach or Luke, but he took the microphone.

You have to ask him about that when we get into Bonnet Eagle later on this year.

I was Hoping somebody captured that.

That certainly would have been a highlight.

He's back in South Portland and not in Cape Elizabeth and that outstanding video that Kurf Wolffinger made at the end of the 2007 season.

On behalf of the Board of Governors of the Main Shrine Lobster Bowl Classic, we are pleased to honor Coach Mike Haley with the establishment of the Coach Mike Haley Award in recognition of his extensive contributions to the main Shrine Lobster Bowl, both on and off the field.

This award honors individuals for their service and dedication to the game.

This year, very proud and honored to present from Lewiston High School, Jason Fuller.

Congratulations to Jason on winning the Mike Haley Award here in 2026.

Before we get set to start the second half, which will happen in just a moment, of course, the fundraising this year was top notch.

Mike Haley Award is always for dedication and service.

And when you say dedication and service, Rob Munsing, you can see why Jason Fuller just won that award.

Nobody better than Jason Fuller.

What he does for this game and, and through the years.

Back when I was coaching a couple of times, he was the athletic director in the game, making sure everything ran smoothly.

And now as the athletic director here at Lewiston High School provides a home for the lobster bowl.

And I think we could say probably a permanent home here in Lewiston.

It's just a tremendous place for it.

I would think so.

A tremendous facility.

Location wise, kind of in the middle of the football schools in the state.

Not in the middle of the state overall, but the, for the football schools, you certainly have that.

So I think we'd be here for foreseeable future.

And speaking of guys who are very, very involved overall, Joe Herseman is, I believe he's the guy standing by right now with Jack Webb.

I see him right down there.

In fact, let's send it down to the fields.

I mean, talk about the, the fundraising efforts of this year and just everything that went into that.

And just every year it seems to just raise another level, raise another level.

Well, it speaks to the character of all the kids that are chosen and selected to play in this great game.

Right from day one, right out of the gate, they set the tone and they continued it on and, and it's really been so great to see them all band together for the common goal of raising money for Shriners Hospitals.

Certainly.

And we've got over $300,000 this year, which is just unbelievable.

And you told a story about how you were driving home last night from the banquet and it went up 3,000.

Just how has the money poured in as you see the fundraising efforts from these players and cheerleaders?

Yeah, like I said, driving up to the banquet last night to drive into the game here on the morning.

I've watched them continue to post on social media.

Keep pushing the pedal down and keep bringing in the money.

And it's no surprise based on the character of the overall group.

So very proud of each and every one of them and proud.

They made a lot of Shriners really proud today.

Over the course of lobster roll week in the game, there are plenty of amazing stories, fundraising efforts, players making great plays on the field.

We've got a very unique one here though.

I'm here with Brady Schroyer.

But what you also butchered was the milk in the cafeteria this week.

We got 104 cartons of milk from this cat this week at Fox Roths Academy.

I heard they had to bring in a whole new shipment for you.

What was that like?

How was your stomach even feeling?

So I made sure to time it right, made sure that practices didn't conflict with it.

I didn't want to have an upset stomach for practices.

Only drank milks in the meals we had right after practices and then I'd laid down, make sure it all digested before the next practice.

Didn't want to be sick at all.

Didn't want to hurt my lobster bowl chances or anything like that.

Wanted to make sure that I was getting in calories though.

That was the biggest thing.

Calories in, calories out.

Didn't want to be losing too much weight over the course of the week and I figured milk was the best way to do it.

Liquid calories.

I Mean, that, that's incredible.

This is calculated just what even sparked the idea?

What, what was that about?

So first day I drank a lot more than a lot of the other guys, like me and some guys were saying, "Hey, let's drink a lot of milk.

Make sure we're not losing too much weight."

And we counted, I drank 14 on that first day.

So after that we decided to keep count and try to push the limits.

Drank 18 on Monday, 18 on Tuesday, 20 Wednesday, believe 20 Thursday to make 98.

And then I only drank six over the course of Friday and Saturday.

We only ended up having three meals that didn't conflict with practices.

So wanted to make sure I got that 100 mark at the end of the week.

I had no idea.

I had no idea it was this in depth.

So thank you for sharing that with us back to you guys.

Almost sounds like a punishment.

It reminds me of that classic Paul Newman movie Cool Hand Luke.

He had to eat 40 hard boiled eggs or spent a night in the box.

I don't think a night in the box was in the cards overall for Brody Schrayer.

West came back and the West was playing catch up for most of the afternoon after that.

They scored first, but they also scored last.

Just enough to get that extra two points and the nose across the finish line as the cheerleaders will slap hands as well.

A lot of camaraderie will take place now and these players, again, a lot of hugs.

It'll be a slow line.

A little slower for the football players and the cheerleaders as these guys, a lot of respect being shown and they all know why they played this game today, Rob Bunsick.

Oh, that's, that's the credit right there.

And just a, a great history in this game and it gets stronger every year.

You can't say that.

Sometimes these you know, you, you start off and you, you have an idea about something and then you say, okay, well, you know, the next generation's got to carry it on.

Well, that's what this has done.

We've got the next generation doing it, next generation of coaches.

You look back at you know, Coach Cooper, Coach Williams, did the initial first game back in 1990 and all the coaches that are now retired that coached in this game and the next generation of coaches have taken over and they have flourished in it.

And the organization as well, the Shriners, the next generation doing the, doing the job and getting it done.

And I, I couldn't be happier.

That hamchain line, like I said, it's going to take a little while today.

Again, these players with a ton of respect for each other.

Many of them played against each other beforehand.

A lot of times they played against each other on the same side or guys on the same side have played against each other for four years.

It's one of the biggest stories of the game as you kind of watch those players who are rivals on schools that just attested each other sports-wise anyway.

And now Well, again, the bonding that got done over the course of the week and now the players can congratulate each other on a job well done.

What a great game this was 28, 26, you could score up there in the corner.

Yeah, one of the better games I think in the, in the whole series.

And take a look at it, Rob.

Very competitive from the get go and stayed that way all the way through and you know, it was just the last execution by the West.

Don't forget that big 83 yard touchdown that got them back in it After the East had scored and it looked like the East had all the momentum and the West came and struck with that 83 yarder.

That was a big, big play in this game and bevery of big plays in the game, Rob.

Parker Morin today, 110 yards and a touchdown through the air on the ground.

The East led by Tatum Doucette.

18 carries 116 yards, couple of touchdowns.

Trey Tennant leading the way receiving wise, 62 yards on four catches and a touchdown over on the side of the west.

Colum Moran, 136 yards, completed nine of 11 passes, two touchdowns, 120 yards for Trey Walker in a touchdown.

Connor Ayu bled the way on the ground, 115 yards and 23 attempts.

But there's Colin Moran again.

76 yards a touchdown, 13 carries for him.

Overall, over 200 yards all purpose offense today.

And Kai Turner, those six catches, 89 yards and a couple of touchdowns.

His South Portland teammates had one catch for 82 yards.

That was the one you referenced that 82 yard touchdown reception that really turned the game and kind of propelled the West to hold on for this win.

Well, I'm glad I don't have to choose one, one MVP from each team because you had so many standout players in this game.

The award ceremony in just a little bit as you see what these players were playing for here today, get a chance to hold that trophy up at Fox Roft Academy back on Tuesday.

It's heavier than it looks.

It's not heavy at all if you're on the winning side and get to lift that up.

You see the smiles on the faces of all those players on the west.

You know, for many of these players, Rob, this will be the last football game they'll play.

And for those of us that have played the game I'll tell you kids you, you'll be in your 70s like I am and you'll have what I call football dreams.

I'm back playing again.

And it just happens.

It's, it's just such a great game and we, we give so much of ourselves to be able to, to play and all of that.

And I just commend every single one of these players there for taking a week out of their summer.

Many of them are trying to save for college and they took a week off from their jobs.

And they came together for a great cause and to be congratulated for that.

And I want to mention one thing too, that touchdown pass that Cray Walker threw to Alex Horton, 82 yards, the second longest in lobs roll history.

It only is behind an 84 yard touchdown pass that Lawrence's Brandon Ballard through to John Beliskohigan back in 2018 and a 40 to 14 East win.

This game had everything Rob Munsing.

It was a classic, went down to the wire.

So much fun to be here and we couldn't ask for better on our inaugural main public broadcast with the Main Twine Lobster ball.
