- And good afternoon everyone.
Dave Cheever along with the coach.
BL Lippert.
We've got the boys class a state game, we've got the Valley Cavaliers, we got the bears from Easton and we got a contrast in styles.
We - Definitely do.
I'm sure Easton would rather see this game in the forties and fifties and Valley's gonna wanna see it in the seventies, maybe even the eighties.
The, the team that plays with pace gets up and down and that'll be a big battle.
See who can control - And, and we're looking at two drivers of these respective teams.
We've got Harry Lewis for Valley Quickness personified, and then we've got Mason Pier who's like a Swiss Army knife.
He can do anything that he wants for the Eastern bears, but he's gonna have to do it against a very, very good defensive team.
Yeah, - This Valley team really dominated their tournament getting to the state championship and it's gonna be interesting to see, you know, how they attack this valley defense.
Nobody was successful in the South and we'll see what they have in store for from east eastern.
- And this is obviously game number two.
The Valley girls just left here with a gold ball.
- They did?
Yeah.
The valley crowd is here.
All of Bingham is here.
There's a huge crowd.
The boys came out to watch the girls get their, you know, medals and they're hoping they're gonna earn their own here in the next hour and a half.
- Ethan Snow, our sideline reporter is standing by with the coach of the Eastern Bears.
Dan Warren.
- Alright, I'm standing by with Coach Warren of the Eastern Bears Coach Big game here today.
Great to regional tournament for you.
What was the prep like for this Valley team this week?
- We understand valleys a lot like us, they push the ball well.
They're big bodied, they can rebound well so we just gotta be able to handle some physicality and endure all the pressure that they give and try to give it back.
- How do you contain their top guys, both Fisher ts Barry and Harry Lewis?
Two really good players.
How do you contain 'em today?
- Contain slow down.
Whatever we can take to slow down perhaps.
He's a tough cat.
- Alright coach, good luck today.
- Thank you.
- Back to you guys.
- Thank you Ethan.
It's, I think Dan Warren knows what he's up against and he knows what his kids have to do - For sure.
And you see here Easton 15 to two on the season.
60 points a game in the tournament though only giving up 39 points a game.
It's been their calling card defensively 226 miles to get here.
So I, I did a little math.
If you drove south from here leaving the game, you'd be in Providence by the time you got 226 miles.
So they have come a long way.
They brought some fans with them looking for their first goal ball since 1965 and you see they dominated in their tournament a big win over wisdom, a convincing win of a katata and then the regional final as a two seed, a 16 point Victor over a really tough Jones Port Bess team.
So the Eastern bears are primed and ready to take on this valley attack.
- And the valley attack is coached by Mike Staples who also took an opportunity to talk to Ethan Snow.
- Alright, stand by with Coach Staples from the Valley Cavaliers coach back here for the first time in a little bit.
Came up a game short last year.
What was the preparation this, this week for the east against this Eastern Bear team?
- Well we, you know, we looked 'em over pretty good.
I've seen quite a bit of film, they're very good.
They're tenacious, I've noticed they don't give up.
They really get after it on the defensive end.
They do a lot of trapping corners along the sidelines and whatnot.
I think the key for us quite honestly is if they stay in that 1, 2, 2, we gotta get to the middle of the floor.
We get to the middle of the floor, I think we'll be pretty good defensively.
We just gotta do what we do.
We gotta lock down defensively man to man and just do our thing.
Get the ball and get out and run.
That's the way we do our best.
- Awesome coach.
Thank you.
Good luck today.
Back - To you guys.
Lock down defensively, get out and run.
- Exactly.
That's what everyone wants to do.
And a quick look at Valley 19 and two, let's start at the bottom.
Look at these wins in the tournament, 70 to 16 over Greenville.
A 30 plus point win over Islesboro and against Forest Hills.
A a team that's always making deep runs in this tournament.
An 89 42 victory.
They only traveled 57 miles, they're looking for their first goal ball since 2016.
A program that has won plenty of them over there to existence and I've only given up 34 points a game in the tournament as you see.
So a big mission for this eastern team to get on the scoreboard early and often.
- Hey, let's find out who these kids are.
Let's go to Dave Hopkins.
- Ladies and gentlemen, the Maine Principals Association and Fame, the Finance Authority of Maine, remind you that inters scholastic athletics are an extension of the classroom.

Good afternoon basketball fans and welcome to the Hammond Lumber Company Auditorium at the Augusta Civic Center for the main Class S Boys state championship game between the Northern Main champion Eastern, Eastern bears, the visitors in the dark uniforms and the Southern main champions, the Valley Cavaliers, the home team in the light uniforms.
Our officials are Mr.
Rodriguez, Mr.
McCrae and Mr.
Hopkins.
The scorer is David Burns.
The timer is Dave Ott and on the score clock Ed bear, before announcing the starters, we'll introduce each team member first for Easton number 14, William Browning, number 20, chase Mitchell, number 22, Thomas King, number 24, Gavin kill Collins, number 30, Jamie McKay.
Number 34, Aiden Tibbits.
And number 44 Wyatt Manning Harris.
And now for Vallie number one, Landon Hartwell, number 11, Michael Harnett, number 13, David Bouchard.
Number 15, Bryce Hartwell, number 21 Caleb Miller, number 23, Braden Andrews.
And number 32, Braden, lay And now fans, let's meet the starters for this championship game at Guard for Easton, a senior number four, Raiden Cochran at guard for Valley, A sophomore.
Number three, Cameron Lay at center for Easton, a junior number 10, Ashton Bbe, that guard for valley, A senior number five, Colin Nichols at guard for Easton, A junior number 12, Josiah Ellis at Guard for Valley, A senior number 12, Harry Lewis at forward for Easton, a sophomore number 32, Mason Pier at Forward for Valley, A senior number 22, Fisher Tewksbury at forward for Easton, a junior number 42, drew Laro at Forward for Valley, A junior number 24, Levi Short.
The head coach for Easton is Dan Warren.
The head coach for Val is Mike Staples.
- So we've met the teams.
How's this thing gonna be decided?
- Well, only Dave Cheever could come up with these word plays.
Mason, no bricklayer Mason Pelletier a player to watch here he can score the basketball.
42 points in their quarterfinal win over wisdom.
It was Cochrane in the second, sorry, the regional final was 16 and they gotta protect him.
Gotta, you know, get ways, find ways to get him the basketball, keep him out of foul trouble as well.
Trying to defend this valley attack and for valley, play fast in Lewis.
Okay Lewis, as we know Harry Lewis, the point guard that's a dynamic player for them and of course don't make it easy.
They're gonna try to get the ball to Pelletier, make his life difficult and see how that stacks up when this thing ends here in a, in a little bit.
- This could be 32 minutes of mayhem.
- It very well could be A lot of my shoes out here.
Dave, this is good.
I can keep track of who's who based on the shoe colors alone.
- I, I just looked at yours.
Am I on a little break too?
- Right - Off the opening tip Fisher, bury fisher, bury, bury.
Strong ball right to the rim and good non call by the official so far.
That's an an indicator the boys are gonna play a little bit.
- Certainly the block charges have been big points of games including last night in the Gardner game so we'll see how the refs deal with it here today.
- Ellis holding up how you get the Pelletier Pelletier in the corner.
Cochrane no good, all tipped away.
Tewksbury downloaded to Lewis.
Lewis on the runup and no good on the Putback.
No comes to Tewksbury Lewis outside the three point arc.
Too strong and there's gonna be a fall in the rebounding action on the Cavaliers.
- You saw that valley transition though.
They went from defense to rebound to the layup with about one pass and one dribble.
Lewis missed it but he's not gonna miss many of those.
- Short called on the foul junior co-captain of the Cavaliers LA holding, looking for their escape valve.
Number 32 so far, can't find them.
Good defense here by valley.
Nice tip away by Tewksbury on the run to Lewis.
- Up in end.
Little offense by accident they lost control of the ball but ended up in the hands of Perry Lewis and he - Finishes, remember they had numbers and the beauty of that is somebody's gonna be there to pick up the loose ball.
Mason poet here tries to find some room, puts it up around the rim, no good.
Gets his own rebound knocked away inside.
I think that was by short and as he goes again he has fouled and Mason Pelletier will go to the line to shoot two.
- Saw the activity there from Pelletier once he get his own miss and then on the other side of the rim eventually draws the foul call, it's gonna send him to the - Valley File the number 22 Fisher.
- I know original file number one, you know team foul.
Number two, you're quite a bit younger than I but you might remember Pogo stickier - Is the line.
- Yes I do of course.
Springy, springy thing and when I was watching the regional tournament, Pelletier reminded me of the pogo stick.
He gets off the floor as quickly as anybody.
It's - That second leap that always impresses.
Everybody can jump.
Well I can't jump the first time but most people can jump the first time.
It's a second leap you used to.
I used to a long time ago.
It's that second leap that's impressive with Peir.
- Hey it's just a quick twitch and picking up full court here.
Four two is our score valley with the lead in the ball, the ball's knocked off.
Pelletier Cameron Lake Short goes to the corner and blocking in there is Laro as he tried to bother Colin Nichols.
Nichols will go line to shoot two.
- I see the replay here.
Ball ends up number 42, drew Laro.
Here're gonna go to the rim file number one contact across the right wrist.
He's gonna send - LA to line.
As much as Laro is eager to get in there to play defense, he has to be careful.
- Yeah, absolutely.
- I was impressed in the regional watching Ashton Bby number 10.
You know he just was able to establish his presence with without being terribly physical about it.
He just knew where to be.
- Absolutely gonna get a lane violation here on Bugbee as you No he might've been on Pelletier on the inside, both into the lane and gonna get an extra one little chat going on.
Isn't ref selling jokes there Had a pretty good, yeah, pretty good line.
Nichols good for two.
- Make some pay there.
Ellis comes to Pier, pier to the front court receiving the mock applause by Mr.
Short spin move up.
No good and right back for the rebound was Mason - Pier.
It's - All all knocked out of his - Hands.
Yeah, great job.
Going to get your own miss.
He's been very active on the inside.
They're letting him play with the kind of block charge calls stuff so he's had a couple opportunities where I thought he might get called and they've let him play, which - Well his footwork taking the ball on the penetration has been very impressive.
Lewis is knocked to the floor, no call ball goes out of bounds off him and pa put it in.
- If the name's Lewis and Tutbury are familiar, they've been playing in his tournament since eighth grade.
Let's see, you're allowed to play in eighth grade in this newly designed class, but it was always the case in the old class D and these guys have been around it.
They desperately want a gold ball in their final attempt outta here as seniors.
Baseline bug - Beat no down with it on the run is Levi - Short and they're gonna say traveling call.
Yeah travel.
Before the contact the defense was set up to try to take the charge and oftentimes the defender gets there when you're not looking you do travel before the contact.
Good call there.
I believe the degree of physicality that Mike Staples mentioned is evident.
Yeah these teams are getting after it pretty good.
Certainly have some mid-sized bodies out there willing to win a state championship by sacrificing it on every possession that - Ball flock Lewistown to the loose ball and head to short, short peace flock, put back up and in nice play as Colin Nichols there.
Colin - Nichols a couple times I've gotten out from transition.
The first guy hasn't scored but the second guy has that time.
It was Nichols in transition.
Nice - Play in there again by Nichols defensively in the corner to Lewis.
Lewis the bury.
Time out I think and warrants wants a time out.
His kids are being pieces in the basket and they're not getting back on defense.
On the transition - I think's bigger issue is the defensive transition has not been there and it's been too easy for Valley - As a fourth generation family.

Easton with the ball.
And right now everything has been pretty much has advertised.
Bl - Yeah, trying to get the ball through.
Pelletier offensively been okay getting to the rim.
Haven't made a watch and it's a valley transition.
That's been really the difference so far.
Laro takes - It back.
Pelletier Bugbee, Bugbee.
Far aside, what up?
Laro Ball goes out of bounds.
It's gonna stay - Eastern.
Bear basketball.
Now that one off the hand of Levi's.
Short.
Short got tipped from behind and then ultimately tipped off his hand.
Keeps it with the east and Bears Cochran inbound.
- Pelletier calls Fort gets it.
Let's buy with a three.
No good.
Fisher Tewksbury.
Head to Harry Lewis.
Lewis.
Well I'll tell you, their outlet - Pass doesn't waste any time.
Now they're getting up and down when they can this time they had to pull it back out but they are always looking to hit ahead Lewis, quick jab, step brings it back.
Cross court - Colin down to - Bury Fisher, bury Tewksbury and Lewis get a lot of the attention.
But Colin Nichols, the other seniors played really well in this first quarter.
- That was a nice pass by Nicholas down with it.
Bury - Again short.
Thanks at home making it look too easy this time.
It's Levi short of the transition using the glass.
- I was talking to Mike this week, Mike Staples and he said they went all over Central Maine and Eastern Maine playing ball this summer.
They were down at the Coney program.
Yep, around Augusta for a while.
It's all part of the dedication - That these kids show and they played a tougher schedule.
They played Monmouth, they played Dale so they challenged themselves.
Buck b hop it in, they get a little transition.
Offense going from Ashton Buck B Ashton Buck B - On the dribble.
Lay comes to Nichols.
Nichols takes a look.
Hands it off to Harry Lewis for three.
Bury on the Putback.
No good Pelletier Bury thought he got hit and we're gonna block and file Harry Lewis right in front of us there.
50 oh Rayon Cochran turned around and he had - No place to go, right?
Yeah, Lewis was setting up Camp Ley file number 12.
Harry Lewis, be a block.
Personal file number one, team file number three.
You see the pass up, the sideline and Lewis slides just a little bit late to get in front of - Cochrane.
Jamie McKay comes in again.
Youthful conservative.
He's a junior.
Number 30 Larin steps away from lay three point shot attempt.
- Nice.
Yeah they needed that.
He had 16 to lead the way to reran in the regional finals.
Three, they need him to get going here - Short.
Back to Lewis, back to lay.
They swing the ball around.
Left side Lewis top of the key for three wide laal finds a loose ball goes to the floor gathered and now it's kicked.
- That was a good call.
Yeah, great hustle by both teams.
The pass they're trying to valley's trying to make a pass across and the right foot, you'll see here both go to the floor Lamar a little bit late and it's Colin Nichols that's gonna try to get the ball to Tewksbury and the right foot of Pelletier kicks it away.
Great shot there.
- I like B that they're letting these kids get after a little bit physically.
Absolutely.
Fisher Tewksburys arguing the case.
I I think I got bumped.
- Yeah.
- So yeah, well it's gonna take more than that at this point.
- Dave Chief just got done saying there, letting, letting you guys play so it's consistent.
You might as well play.
Let's set play here.
You gonna let them play?
That was a lot of contact.
They let it go Lewis for three.
Yeah, he missed kind of badly on his first couple attempts that one looked like the normal - Harry Lewis.
And I think the idea here Bal is you can go ahead and whine but it's not gonna do you any good.
No - For sure not.
- Pelletier has the ball picked off by Lewis Pelletier on the chase doesn't make it.
- Harry Lewis in transition.
Harry Lewis - With the - Steel in the land.
- Ube thought of going cross court to McKay.
They'll bring it back to Laro Laro for three and they're gonna say player control - File.
Yeah, illegal screen there.
At that time Jimmy McKay came out and bumped the valley defender.
Obvious call there Eastern Player Control file law number three 30.
You see the screen kind of right knee to the right knee.
Number one, number two, illegal - Screen.
That was, that was a block from behind in football, right?
Absolutely.
Pelletier cross court to Cochrane.
Cochrane but side no Pelletier with a rebound steps inside the lane.
Had - Just enough room, his first field goal make of the game.
He's been active on the offensive blast.
Finally rewarded with an offensive rebound and a putback.
- Yeah, - I remember when there used to be telephone booths.
This this kid had to make a lot of room where he had no room to make.
He had three guys within elbows distance of him re ball - There from Cameron Lee.
- All five - Starters for Valley have scored in this - First quarter.
That's one of the hallmarks of the Cavaliers.
Over the course of the season, all of these guys are unafraid to put the ball in the air.
Pelletier drives on short, then reads, thinks that Rhonda Laro into Pelletier.
Takes a look, puts it up blocked.
Nice play by Tewksbury.
Blocked again but - A foul.
Tewksbury went up there, blocked the first shot.
Couldn't see who the foul was gonna be on.
I think it's going to be on Tewksbury.
Maybe not.
Let's see.
- Valley foul number 24, - The first attempt short blocked on a call.
Short.
You gonna get short on the shoulder?
Yeah, there it is.
Yep.
Pier at the line.
- Shoot.
- You see Bury turnaround.
Strap his head around pretty quickly.
It wasn't on you Fisher.
He's gotta be on the all turn.
Name.
Team Fisher.
Tewksbury.
Quite a name.
- And for those of you who haven't followed the eastern bears, Mason Pier is the captain.
One of the captains on this team obviously has some skills.
And remember he's a sophomore and as you said, he's been, he's been on this floor or been on the eastern floor and in Bangor for every year since eighth grade.
Colin Colin - Nichols.
Nice cross court pass.
Beautiful job.
Didn't have to come down and land.
Just laid it in on the initial leap and now almost a steal.
- Bugbee goes down, load him.
McKay Block by short picked up by Nichols Lewis gets out of traffic.
Cuts through the lane.
Picked up by Tewksbury.
Tewksbury puts it up.
Bugged me on the block.
Bugged me on the block again.
Tewksbury turned around and complained and at the horn he can't get anybody to listen to him.
- Yeah, he two attempts down there where he thought he got foul and nothing going his way.
Right now we've - Reached the end of the first quarter of play and the boys Class S State championship Game Valley Cavaliers 24 Eastern Bears 10.
We'll be right back.
- Production of high school basketball on Maine.
Public television is made possible by people like you and by - At Thomas College.

For more information go to Maine public.org.
Second quarter underway, 14 point lead for the Valley.
Cavaliers Mason Pelletier.
With the ball cuts through traffic, Fisher Tewksbury knocks the loose fall away to Harry Lewis ahead.
The short, - There's the transition's blocks to the end and transition layups on the other end.
I've been impressed Valley challenging everything at the rim.
- Short transition plays with numbers.
- Absolutely - Well knocked away by Tewksbury down court to Lewis on the run.
Leaves it short with it.
McKay, - You couldn't have walked that pass down any better from Tewksbury.
That was right on the money.
Ellis comes - To Pelletier to Bugbee, back to Pelletier.
Takes a look at Tewksbury.
Goes up over him.
No good.
McKay gets loose.
File in the rebound and over the top.
A little push - From behind.
See from Pier.
Good job on the backside of that, getting the space.
Oh there it is.
Has a file from camera line.
Yeah.
Over the back - Hug comes to Pelletier.
Pelletier steps inside banks at home.
He's the energizer bunny for this offense.
He's always gonna get going.
Ball flipped.
Head to Lewis down - To Bury.
I saw the strength there at the went up.
Saw the shoulder to shoulder and laid it right through the contact.
- Mike Staple would say one of the difficult things that the Cavaliers had to do was get used to Harry Lewis and the speed of which he would zip the pass to an open man.
- Absolutely.
Sometimes the passengers are a little too good that you're not expecting him to come quite as crisply as they do pier for three.
They're gonna need him to get going.
Mason Pier for three.
He's got 10 points already.
- Harry Lewis drives past Peir and they're gonna call McKay on the blocking foul.
- Let me be the first to say I love this right now.
They call all these blocks.
These are all late arrivals.
I like these as blocks instead of charges.
Easy file number 30.
Jamie McKay, Harry Lewis gets there first draws the foul.
- You saw that file number one grimace on the part of McKay Lewis.
He was certainly hoping for the player control foul.
Dan Warren talking to Ashton Bby on the sideline.
I mean other than somebody has to release right, get back on defense.
And they're reluctant to do that.
But coach, we could score.
Harry Lewis - Makes it 30 15 Valley nine points early for the senior star Harry Lewis - Rugby coming to La Laro Laro picked up by leg.
Drives in on Tewksbury off an end - That Laro strong on the interior.
Saw what Drew T Berry did on the other end.
Did the same thing on this end.
Harry Lewis - Circus layup.
- Harry Lewis - Gets it back and there wants a time out.
Time out Eastern Harry Lewis is going where he wants when he wants how fast he wants - And - You gotta do something about that.
- Yeah.
Play fast in Lewis.
And that's exactly what they're doing right now.

Good looking.
32 17 - Valley Valley Staples.
Getting 'em going, saying let's keep pushing the pace guys.
Push the pace, they're gonna wear 'em down.
And right now it's Harry Lewis getting him wherever he wants.
As you said.
That's the difference in the game.
- But it begins in the back court and Levi short, Colin Nichols, Tewksbury, and for that matter, Harry Lewis, they all of these guys quick hands and I don't see anybody backing up.
They attack.
Here's Harry Lewis up and in and foul.
Siah Ellis so angry with himself, he dangled the ball out there.
And quick hands of Harry Lewis - As a steal.
And he's gonna go in at this point.
You just gotta kind of let him go instead of that bump.
And Lewis the senior too strong absorbs the contact number.
Josiah Ellis first file number one, team number two 13 points.
Dave, just like that.
The average 21 in the regional five rebound six assists.
And you're seeing all the talents on display - And despite the pace that they're playing at, they seem relaxed.
- Yeah, no question.
These guys are used to this this's, the brand of basketball they play and they're gonna change up.
Who's bringing the ball up here?
It's gonna be raiding Cochran.
Now initiating the offense and Valley.
Switching up the defense.
- Lamone looked into bug beat.
Says I'm gonna go to Pier.
Who goes to Bugbee?
Bug beat rattles - Out.
McKay on the foot back is good.
Yeah, second or third time Akay on the inside is carved up some space.
That time he finished it for his first two points of the game.
- Nichols, I had to lay, lay up and in kind of a modified transition there cannot turn your back on the ball.
- You absolutely cannot.
In that time it was not even really a transition hoop that just didn't really match up.
And it's an easy layup.
Can't afford those - Pelletier top of the key block by short ro for three short Lewis down to the loose ball ahead to short too far.
- That's all right.
You live with those.
If your coach Staples are gonna want to be out in transition, you might throw one away every once in a while.
Well you're - Planting the seed in the bear's minds that, oh my gosh, I just got down here now I gotta race back there.
And the ball is beating the, the pass is faster than my running.
- Absolutely that ball just outta the reach of short.
But again, if you're valley, that's part of your DNA, you're gonna keep doing that all night.
- Cochrane to Bugbee to Pelletier.
Look back at Cochrane.
Let's fly with a three too strong McKay on the Putback is up an end.
Yeah, - Two times in a row.
Jamie McKay hit the offensive of rebound, puts it in - Lay.
I had the Nichols Nichols head, fakes on Laro.
Laro on the block.
Nice play by Drew Laro Fisher.
T Barry says, I'll take the loose ball.
Lay looked down court for just a minute.
He had short open.
Now he comes into the lane back to Nichols.
Ahead to Tewksbury.
Tewksbury drives on Pelletier and Pelletier and he get called for the jump ball.
Tewksbury picked it up.
He - Said, wait a minute, Pelletier was trying for the charge and said, puts his left hand on the ball.
A little bit of body there as well.
It goes uncalled.
It's just gonna be a jump stay with Valley.
You know what, so far we don't have a complaint, right?
Nope.
Well I think Fisher Tutbury might have a few complaints.
- Well yeah, but he might.
But - He's gonna get a call there.
Oh, I couldn't get it to - Go.
One of the things that it was, it's funny listening to Mike Staples talk about him.
He said Tewksbury comes in, he works, he works.
Yeah, he works.
He's not gonna raw McKay, he's not gonna personal father.
Number three, three get too big for himself.
He comes in, bury does what he does and remains very composed about it since he a heck of an athlete.
Obviously very, very strong, - Very good athlete.
See the strength at the ramble offensively.
Offensively and defensively.
A little bit long there on the first attempt.
But he's been a catalyst for this team.
I remember him as a freshman.
He might've played some minutes, you know, meaningful minutes as an eighth grader.
He's been on this for a long, - I think freshman year.
Yeah.
- See I'm glancing to the right to figure out what's going on underneath in the rebounding action makes the second - 1 38, 21 under four minutes to play.
First half Bby back to Pelletier.
Pelletier picked up by short fish.
Tewksbury come out defensively.
Pelletier had to pick the ball up.
They tried to go inside.
Tough play there as Aiden Tibit tried to force the pass.
Lewis, I don't know where he was going with that, but it's right back in the hands of Fisher Tewksbury to short too short with the loose balls Pelletier on the run.
Cochrane bug me in the corner back to Cochrane.
Cochrane flips it up.
It's no good.
Fisher Tewksbury is foul - By Tibbits.
Cochran had really a tough angle there as a lefthander going down the right side.
Try to go back across his body, use the glass, couldn't dos, rebounded and fouled by tidbits.
Personal file number - One, file number four.
We're not gonna suggest that Tim Vincent wants to intimidate Fisher Tewksbury, but if he is, it's not going to work.
- No, that's not a strategy I think coach wants to employ.
If you're Dan Warren, we don't wanna try to intimidate him.
We don't need to fire him up at it any more than he already is.
- Lay watch by Cochrane comes in the front court, brings it across the Landon Hartwell, that Pelletier finally down with the defensive rebound.
Harry Lewis there and he gets fouled by Josiah Ellis.
He's gonna be shooting, that's the fifth foul against Harwell in short rush over to pick up Lewis May.
You felt that one, but there's something to be said for that kind of lateral - Quickness.
12 Josiah Ellis.
Now he waited for the outlet pass and he stole it.
Then got foul and ensuing action, grabbing his right hip rust.
Give him a chance to kind of, - I don't wanna get into a style thing here, but Rusty Hopkins had to tell Harry to tuck the shirt back in.
Harry Harry was looking to go for the modern look.
- Yes.
See that go uncalled a lot.
They kind of let him play with a shirt tail hanging out.
Well yeah, he just just got a little bit of a - Bruise on that, that hip bone.
He said, oh that hurts there.
Let me just take a look at it.
He said well just remember to tuck the shirt back in.
Here's Lewis 40 points.
He's got five free throw makes.
They put up points in the regional and they're putting up points this afternoon approaching two and a half to go Pelletier.
And they're gonna go player control foul on Mason - Pelletier.
There's the charge.
They tried to go to a two step jump stop but, and said watch Berry beat him to the spot.
Slide to his right.
He clear control and the contacts gonna go against, makes IMP appellate just his first personal file.
Number one, - Just first.
And he and Radden Cochran talked to each other briefly as he acknowledged the foul.
Cameron Lay watched by Cochrane goes to Landon Hartwell.
They tried to get the Fisher bury and Laro says, nah, I think I'll get it Cochrane.
I head the Mason Pier puts it up.
No good.
And Fisher Tewksbury.
I head to Harry Lewis.
Laro chases it down and Lewis lets him fly by - Harry Lewis.
That's Lewis the part of the offense.
He never, Harry Lewis never really got across.
Half court was waiting for the outlet and he was down to the other end in a heartbeat.
A - Good hustle bike.
Drew Laro, but he couldn't stop himself in time as - Lewis just let him go by.
They've got him doubled up right now.
42 21.
An impressive outburst here from Valley - Ellis finds Mason Pier for three.
Mason Pier finds - The three and IED there makes Pier second, 3.83.
But as you said, make it hard on him.
It has not been easy for him so far.
Offensively - Lewis for three.
- Yes that was soft.
What can't he do?
He is lighting up the scoreboard here.
Harry Lewis and his final game in the valley.
Blue and white.
What a performance from Harry Lewis.
- He averages 19 over the regular season - A - Time out I guess.
Yep.
And Dan won.
Wants a time out.
45, 24 are measles.
21 point lead with one 12 to go in the half.
Measles.
Very contagious and spreads easily.
Alright, get your calendars out.
High school quiz Joma.
Season number nine.
Season number nine.
That's how long this show's been on.
It's about to begin.

Right?
Check your calendar Thursday, March 19th at 8:00 PM right here on Maine Public Television.
- Todd Guntner, the host.
Now that would've been a show you would've been on in high school, right?
- That was - Just after me.
No, I'm saying if you had, if it was around at your time, would you have been on the Quiz Bowl team?
- Oh no, they wouldn't have let me on.
- I don't believe that - Ellis.
Oh, good attempt by short Mason.
Pelletier says no.
And we're gonna get a hold in there.
Was it gonna be Lay or Hartwell?
- I think it's gonna be on the lay.
Yeah it is on the le thought he got foul right there.
You see the remnants of that?
And he's gonna go to the spin, move to the right foul number two LA They're got outta of the ball there, but they're gonna call a foul.
It's gonna call shooter penalty at the line shooting.
- Now we've been, we've been here long enough now Ben Gibson and I were talking a little earlier during the girls game.
Luke and Jason Hartwell.
Gordon Hartwell.
Now we got Landon Hartwell and you're going kid's in eighth grade.
- Yeah, they've got some Hart wells up there in Bingham for sure.
They play, they play basketball.
- And I would bet Leanna Hartwell probably has some pickup games against her brother.
Oh yeah.
Cochrane goes to Bugbee Fisher.
Topi says Sealer.
End of the lane been moved, travels Rusty Hopkins all over it.
- Yeah, I saw how Rusty Hopkins say you dragged it to Bury, looked at it and he did.
And he said you dragged him into his credit.
Fisher two spear said, okay, - Mason Pier Front court, Laro Bugbee bug be found - By Hartwell.
Are they?
Hartwell is an eighth grader.
Look at the biceps on this kid.
I didn't even workout whatever the workouts he's doing.
Harwell.
It's a rugged eighth grader file number one.
- I can recall with some clarity.
Team - Foul.
Number three, - The twins, the Hartwell twins look amazingly like that.
But I didn't see them in eighth grade.
They true.
They were actually in high school before they were on the court here.
Ellis drives on.
Hartwell tries to scoop it in.
Cochran picks up the loose fall and does it himself.
Yeah, both Harwell went for the block and left Cran alone.
Alone under the hoop for the Putback.
Yeah.
Talked to Dan Warren and he was saying that what he wants, he said I'd like to have a game in like the forties.
He said, I think we can win a game in the forties.
Be very, very good game.
Well he's gonna wind up scoring more than 40, but lets say pick up some defense.
It's gonna be a challenge.
We're - 45 already, Dave, we're in trouble.
- We've reached the end of the first half of play in the Boys Class S State championship game B Cavaliers 45 Eastern Bears 28th.
We're gonna half time of fun for you.

- Let's go.
Have some fun with trivia.
- Welcome back to the Augusta Civic Center, Dave Cheever, along with the coach BL Lippert.
We're at the half 45 28 Valley leading Easton and as is the customer of the Main Principals Association.
We have some stuff to hand out today.
Let's go to the public address announcement.
David Hopkins - Please.
Gentlemen, on behalf of the main Principals Association and Fame, the Finance Authority of Maine, it's an honor to present sportsmanship banners in both boys and girls basketball.
During the season, each basketball team in Maine was asked to select an opponent they felt was most deserving of receiving a sportsmanship award.
The schools we recognize with a sportsmanship award have displayed respect, officials, coaches and opponents, fair play, honesty and integrity, and a true love for the game of basketball.
Presenting the award today are Dan Hart, retired administrator, guy E Row School, and Peter McLaughlin, the assistant principal Meki High School.
We are pleased at this time to recognize in boys Class S North the hornets of Ashland District School.
Here today to receive the award is Coach Liz Terio, along with Players Carter, Craig, Carson Howes, Hudson Thomas, Darius Sawyer, Landon Sutherland, Dylan Berry Manager, Millie Craig and manager - Isabella Monte Pit.
Congratulations.
Ashland - Had a good, excuse me.
A good look at David Hopkins as Ashland, there's a ride for you.
A lot of people have put the car and drive and come some distance for these state games.
- Absolutely.
Anytime you get the D teams, you know, some coming from as far North home, it feels like Canada, they get all the way down here, the whole town comes.
It's what makes this tournament so special is and kind of the small schools and what they go through to get to these tournaments and how much it means to the program and the community.
Retirement, - We're at the half and as is our want.
We try to get out in the crowd a little bit and Ethan Snow is hanging in with a halftime guest - I'm standing by with Lucas mcnally at mainebasketballrankings dot com.
There used to be a time where he would lay under the radar.
Nobody knew who he was, but now he is.
He's coming tradition to have a spot here during state championship weekend.
Talking to me, Lucas, you've done such a great job with the, you know, the rankings and everything you do during the regular season.
Now you've got the live stats going to all three venues at the tournament.
Describe the re how the relationship with the NPA has grown over the past couple years to make that happen.
- It's been an evolution of realizing that.
I think when I stopped being anonymous, they were like, oh, this is a real person.
And so, and then just talking to people face to face, it's like politics.
If you don't talk to people face to face, you don't know how you can be mutually beneficial.
And so it's kind of turned into a mutually beneficial relationship and so far it's like - Good.
So you've got live stat set up here at Augusta, you got it set up in Bangalore and then you yourself have been down in Portland.
You and I saw a lot of each other in Portland the past week, but the only time we see each other.
But just describe what it's like for you to be able to do this during the week.
You know, this is a really big week for everybody involved, but for you especially not a whole lot of people put on as much miles as you do during tournament week.
'cause you've been a little bit everywhere, especially during the state championship weekend.
Describe what it's like for you to be able to do this.
- I mean, it's a lot of fun to get outta your house and get outta your own head and get around and see people and you know, I'm not even doing any games here, but I'm here to, to see you and to see other people and to see Augusta people.
And last night went to Bangor, saw a bunch of people and it's all just a big community.
And so, you know, if you can get some FaceTime with people and hang out and like, where else would you want to be on a Saturday in February?
It's cold out.
- Very, very true.
Well, he'll be making the trip down to Portland here in a little bit.
I'm staying right here and with the guys in the booth.
Dave, coach Libert, back to you.
- Thank you very much Ethan.
Yeah, that guy does an amazing job.
- Yes he does.
He is.
I, I remember seeing him on Facebook years ago and then at some point his name came out as, you know, the guy behind main basketball rankings and then all of a sudden his face came out and it's everywhere and everywhere game I watch he's in somehow in Bangor, then he is in Portland, then he is in Augusta.
It's pretty impressive.
But someone's gonna tell him it's actually not that cold out today Dave.
Beautiful day.
It's nice here in Augusta.
45 ish degrees.
So, - But we're in the right place.
- We are for sure - 45, 28 at the Half Valley's back out here, warming up for the third quarter and we're gonna have that for you when we return to the Augusta Pacific Center.

It all kicks off April 2nd on Maine Public Television.
- We are set for the third quarter of play at the Augusta Civic Center.
I'm Dave Cheever, along with the coach BL Lippert and both teams on the floor.
45 28 Valley leading the Bears of Easton High School.
And if they can't figure out a way to stay with Harry Lewis, it's gonna be a long, long afternoon.
- Yeah, 21 points for the senior.
It's his, what he averaged for the regional tournament.
He's probably gonna play the full four quarters today and could put up a pretty impressive number.
But if you're Easton gotta get back in transition, even if you sacrifice an offensive rebound or two, they've done a pretty good job on the offensive glass McKay.
And obviously we talked about Pelletier rebounding his own misses, but you gotta get back and stop the transition 'cause Valley has really been surgical.
- The Bears will open up with possession in the third quarter.
Ellis watched by Lewis and he knows better than to expose the basketball as Harry Lewis.
One of the quicker defensive guards that we've seen here.
Ellis bothered by Lewis, picks up the dribble, comes to Pelletier, turns on short and Fisher bury lay picks up the, the loose ball - Had great help.
That time from Tewksbury fourth, A tough shot and they tracked down the rebound - Pelletier bothered the pass that was headed toward Nichols.
And Itch goes out of bounds off Colin Nichols and it becomes Eastern basketball.
- I love these seats.
I'm able to see what Mike Staples said.
He goes, pass it here, not the lob Pass over the top here and then we swing it.
Yeah, it's good to see the coaches in action.
Yeah, don't get greedy.
- Drew Laro jump.
Stop travels.
- I came to the jump stop.
- He was okay.
He'd have to leave both feet at the same time.
Correct?
As soon as he, as soon as he moved that, that third foot, sorry, but - The intent was good.
It was, yeah.
Nice jump stop and then went, added some more footwork to it.
That's a travel.
- Tewksbury comes to Nichols, back to Tewksbury.
Takes a look.
Lay for three too strong Ellis with a loose ball.
Finds Laro ahead to Pelletier.
Short bothering Pelletier disturbs the pass.
Nichols Pelletier Ellis Laro would lay on him.
Laro into the lane.
Oh, fish - At Tewksbury says, maybe not.
He almost hit the girls gold ball, which is over there in the student section for Valley.
He almost sent that ball over to hit it.
We watch this as the drive here and there's a swat from Tewksbury.
- Pelletier - Looking for room has just enough Mason using the body there.
Spun inside, laid in off the glass.
- Cameron lay bothered by Ellis.
Gets the ball to Nichols.
Nichols takes a look, comes to Harry Lewis Fisher.
Tewksbury lost the ball out of bounds.
Pelletier went down.
He was kind of hoping that Tewksbury got called for the player control fo that didn't happen.
- They do get the ball as a result.
But yeah, he's hoping to pick up some fouls on Tewksbury.
Maybe see him go to the bench.
But nobody really in any foul trouble on this game.
- And as befits the way the game was called in the first half hasn't changed much here in the third quarter.
Boy, any soft pass, particularly on the diagonal, is awfully tempting for the Cavaliers.
Levi Short being chased down by Laal Bby.
Good defensive work by Ashton Bby Mason Pelletier picks off one of those lazy passes and they're gonna say a blocking foul on Fisher Ts bury that - Steal here.
You talked about those passes, those long passes.
Two spirit racing to beat him to the spot.
You see the footwork, they're trying to time it up and sliding in.
Good call again.
- Once he started to turn that shoulder, you might have heard the cheering that was going on close to us.
It was Folks from Easton are in immediate proximity to our broadcast position and they were most pleased that Miss Tewkesbury was called for the foul.
He gets the loose ball off the miss Free throw.
13 point lead Harry Lewis drives - Makes the explosion there from Lewis is just special.
Harry Lewis did a nice job.
That's not even transition, but he makes it look like a transitional hip.
It's that easy.
Paul goes into Pelletier, bothered by Tewksbury.
Put back up in by Bugbee a little bit more of an offensive rhythm.
We'll give you a little warning I think here for touching the ball after the make.
But Ashton Bugbee does the nice job on the weak side there.
Lays it in.
Let's see the vaunted delay of game warning.
They're explaining it right now to Coach Warren saying the ball went through and you guys tapped it away.
And it's a good strategy.
'cause Vale's gonna take it outta the rim and go for a layup the other way.
If you don't, - We had that call last night.
We've had two of them.
Hey, that was a flop.
And don't do that again.
A little too strong.
Tewksbury on the Putback is fouled.
Now.
First shot, way up over the glass, comes down in Ts Barry's hands.
Now it might be a little easier with a 13 point lead East didn't file the number to remain composed, but they don't seem to be too upset about anything.
No, they're Notre - Hanging in the air and just putting their head down and playing basketball.
That's, it's got them here and that's what they gotta do to get back in this game.
- God, Easton hung around, hung around, hung around with Jonesport.
Biles and then that second half.
Yeah, - Played great.
- It was.
And Lightning can be captured in a bottle every now and then, but their offensive efficiency's gonna have go up just a bit.
Tewksbury makes it 48, 34, 5 minutes to go.
Third quarter, he's - Got 10 joining Lewis is in double figures.
- Cochrane comes to Ellis around a Drew Laro.
Looked inside, decided against it.
Pelletier tries to clear out some room.
Bug me inside.
The Cochrane comes to bug me, bug me, hands it back.
And Ellis tried to go back - To Bugbee.
A lot of passing.
A little triangle action over there in the corner, but nothing going toward the rim.
Ultimately.
That - Was a tough play though.
When Ellis left his feet, Bugbee started going, perhaps thinking it was gonna be a shot.
- Right pass got on him pretty quickly.
- Short to Louis.
Lewis steps back away from Ellis.
Crossover Dribble and yeah, shuffled the feet and the travel.
Call Colin Nichols - Here you see the drive picks it up.
1, 1, 2, 2 3, 4 Valley.
Only three points so far in this third quarter.
Been a little bit of a slowdown compared to what they certainly put up in the first half.
- Pelletier asked for the ball back short, Mrs.
On the defensive move and - Pier makes him pay Pelletier.
Yeah, really good job there by Pelletier.
Kind of faking to the right and then stepping back through to get to the right hand and finish.
Mel Mason.
- Pelletier on the steel.
We got a player on the floor.
Ellis, - That was a big shot there.
Could have cut it back to single digits.
- Cochran shot falls short though Nichols flips to Lewis watch by Cockran.
Flipped over to Nichols again.
Nichols looked inside the short, decided let's reset.
Lewis drives by Ellis.
Flips up and end.
- Fisher Tewksbury.
Yeah, those guys have done that for five years at Valley that time.
Lewis pulled the ball out, said let's open up some lanes for me to drive and found Tewksbury once they held him.
- And as soon as that defender left, s Bury Pelletier blocked - By Tewksbury.
I don't track the number of blocks, but Tewksbury has gotta be up 5, 6, 7 in that range.
Here you see him recover across the lane.
It's a recognition actually short.
Got it too.
Yep.
I've been impressed with Levi short, especially on the defensive end.
He's drawn the assignment of Pelletier and he has been in his back pocket Rugby B, we call that a - Two toe on the line.
Harry Lewis takes it inside and absorbs the punishment will go to the line.
- Now Lewis drove the lane in the air, got bumped from behind.
I think this is gonna be against Bugbee and it is.
- Easton filed a number 10.
Ashton Bby personal file number one, team file Number two.
- Good shot of Lewis.
Lewis - Is the line - Again, as you pointed out, B, nobody on these teams is in foul trouble.
- No, no, it's, you know, not a ton of calls.
Either team goes particularly deep on the bench or hasn't gone particularly deep on the bench, but nobody in foul trouble, which is what you wanna see in a championship - Game.
It's like roll the ball out.
Just keep playing.
- Absolutely.
- Little Horn sounds Lewis, just keep going.
Cochran flips the ball ahead to Laro looking for help knocked aside by Nichols where they get their hands in the passing lanes.
They certainly do so quickly.
Oh Fisher, Tewksbury bumped, bugged me off on the play.
It drives on Pelletier loose Paul, and - I'm gonna say Fisher Pelletier was out of bounds when he touched it in the rebounding action.
- Yeah.
Now we got another Cavalier clutching his hip.
Colin Nichols.
- It's been a physical game.
They've let him play for sure.
- Harry Lewis LOBs it out to Tewksbury around a lay back to Tewksbury.
They go to Short Lewis for three.
Yes.
- Yeah.
Big time offense right there.
Inside Out finds Harry Lewis.
He's got 27 unofficially.
- Yeah, but as you pointed out, this is not something they're making up.
They actually practice this stuff.
Laro little inside out offense for Valley has been very effective.
Pelletier goes into traffic, loses control of the ball.
It's picked up and they're gonna give the Valley time out.
Wow.
The Valley fans are happy.
The Eastern fans are not - Valley fans.
- Oftentimes you'd see that call to travel, - Right?
Eastern was trying to tie it up.
The Valley Cube was kind of flopping on the floor and they give it time out - As a fourth generation.
Now here we are in game number two on a Saturday.
We had two games last night.
Did you miss a game?
You wanna watch one again?
Maine Public is Rebroadcasting, all of the state final games this weekend, last night's Class B games we're seeing this morning.
But today's games begin tonight at 10:00 PM with a replay of the Class C Girls game, then Championship Weekend picks up at six o'clock tomorrow morning for a full day of state final excitement, starting with a Classy Boys at six in the morning.
For the full replay schedule, head to Maine public.org/ - Basketball@meansavings.com.
Couple good games last night, - Lawrence.
Yeah, Lawrence winning.
And congratulations to the Lawrence Bulldogs and the mighty, mighty tigers of Gardner.
I know I have to say that sitting next to you, I gotta go.
Got time to go.
Dave, it was nice to see you.
- They played really well.
Did a great job.
Hey, get them credit.
I have to Begrudgingly - Nichols facing Laro.
Tewksbury just hanging out.
Natalie Lewis coming down a minute and a half to play.
Third quarter Nichols.
Nice bounce pass to Tewksbury.
Runs outta room.
Gotta - Get Laro from behind.
He doesn't love the call.
Tewksbury didn't get many calls in the first half.
Had a few come up here in his third quarter.
Cochrane and Laro - Were saying we thought it was more like a travel and they didn't get the call.
- Look at Fisher Tewksbury and these two kids that have been playing together for so long, their games really compliment each other.
You know, Lewis the guard that gets out in transition and layups and Tewksbury, the tough kid on the inside can shoot it enough.
You know, both good passers, both great defenders.
What, what a combination they've had here for five years - And it brought these guys along like, like Nichols and short.
Yep.
And, and to, for the Cameron Lee as well.
- You can't win it with just two guys.
You gotta have five.
We're gonna get a bump here from TS Barry.
But - The, the thing that's been impressive during the regional and probably during the regular season as well, although I didn't, I didn't see any of the Valley games in the regular season, but the interchangeability of these kids, they're all active defensively.
They're all willing to put the ball in play offensively.
And Colin Nichols commits the foul on Raiden Cochrane.
- You see, just there an example of a Nichols in the passing lane.
Some teams kinda let you inbound it there and nothing comes easy against this valley defense Cochran - Will put the ball in play.
Rossy Hopkins tells Colin Nichols, you know, don't crowd the spot.
Let him get the ball in Mason Pier maintains the dribble now picks it up, finds the laro.
This isn't gonna be happy.
Over and - Back.
That ball just out of the reach.
You see Pier go over and off for high five.
Said my bad pass.
Just out of the reach the Laro, he was curling more than flaring and the ball got away.
Bury is gonna sit for maybe the final minute and five seconds of this third quarter.
He's earned a spot on the bench with all the effort he's put forth - 18 point Lead Valley Cavaliers Lewis from the back court under a minute to play third quarter Nichols decides to launch No good - Short on the Putback is good.
Good job elevating over the defense.
Just threw it up there on the rim and it - Rolled in.
Caleb Miller number 21 kept the ball alive on that play as he came in for Tewksbury.
Cochran doesn't connect with Drew Laer - Unable to make that back door cut.
You could hear Cochran from our seat, say back door in the pass.
A little bit too far for Laro.
So they closed the gap a little bit.
Kept Valley quiet.
They're gonna end this quarter though Valley on a nice run to extend the lead back to 20 - Lay.
Taking his time.
Nichols dribbles out of traffic comes to Louis.
Lewis.
Steps away from Cochrane.
Backs away from Pier.
10 seconds to go in the quarter.
Lewis on the dribble, tries to flip it over.
His head to short doesn't go Mason Pier on the run.
Can he get it off?
Yes he can, but he can't convert.
We've reached the end of three quarters of play at the Augusta Civic Center in the Boys Class S State championship game in the Valley.
Cavaliers 58, the Eastern Bears.
38, 8 minutes to go.
Don't go away.
- Production of high school basketball on Maine.

An athletic trainer, physical therapist, your future starts here.
- Sheridan Construction, a Maine company committed to building on their promise for over 75 years - At Thomas College.
We do college differently.
We do academics differently.
We do community differently, we do careers differently.
It's time to do college differently.
- Welcome back to the Augusta Pacific Center.
We're ready for the fourth quarter of play here in the boys class S state championship game.
Dave Chiro, along with the coach, BL Lippert folks standing by from Maine public Ethan Snow will be interviewing the victors at the end of this and the awarding of the gold ball.
And then they're gonna clear out as Brandon Tarot and Karen Magnuson will be in here for the Penobscot Valley Mount Abram girls Class D State championship.
Game ball gets a little bit loose on the way by and back comes Drew Laro for the eastern bears off to Pelletier.
Pelletier wants to find somebody in blue doesn't.
And the tie up is on nickels and laro.
It remains - Bare basketball.
Nichols is the first to the floor all the time when there's a loose ball tied up by Laro.
It's gonna stay down here with Easton.
But you see the effort from Colin Nichols.
- Loose ball picked up by Lewis.
Lewis runs by Cochrane, comes to Tewksbury, gets his own shot on the rebound, doesn't convert Laro ahead to Bugbee Bug beat back to Laro Cochrane.
- Let's fly for three.
Front rim only five points for senior raiding Cochrane at 16 in the regional final.
It's been difficult going for him so far.
Offensively short, baseline, mid-range jumper - Short - And he and Cameron Lay will be the seniors next year in this group.
And they both played great here today.
- Colin Nichols comes up with a loose ball down court to short.
Short has lay goes up instead with his own shot.
- Yeah, if you're right, he if he hit the trailer, that was an easy layup but came down with it, then the defense collapsed.
Couldn't get it to go.
Bugbee goes to Cochrane.
Cochrane, let's fly for three.
Yes, there it is.
Senior gets one his second three point make - Green in Cochrane.
Four three - Lewis drives on Cochrane steps inside Laro.
Loose ball comes to short too strong put back up and in by who else?
Fisher - Speaking of Too strong.
He's too strong on the inside.
16 unofficially for Fisher Tewksberry - McKay goes to Cochrane.
Cochrane up.
No good.
Lewis keeps it alive and Cochrane comes down with it.
Stolen away by Cameron.
Lay - Lewis.
Oh, he thought about, thought about it.
He certainly did.
I think he heard Coach Staple say pull it out.
Yeah, they always wasted a little bit of time.
- Lewis Tewkesbury to Nichols.
Lay baseline, drive up and in - Ah tic-tac toe there.
Spread 'em out.
Lifted everybody off the base line.
Ran a little offense.
Got lay open underneath.
We're gonna get a time out here.
- Dan Warren wants to time out and we're gonna have some substitutions coming to 5 24 to go Fourth quarter, 64, 41 - Game.
Great.
From your friends at Spalding, we hope.
- Here's a programming idea, join host Alin Sarnai for season three of Boreal Means Maine Public television's Emmy award-winning outdoor series where they're hiking up to a beautiful vista or learning about the original, the first Maine State guide.
Fly Rod Crosby.
You'll experience Maine like never before.
The new season starts April 2nd, right here on public television.
- Well the name like Fly Rod, he had to do that, right?
- She, you know, not only was she the first, was she?
I mean, yeah, fly Rod Crosby was a and that's - Past me Dave.
I don't know that one.
- Well it was, I guess - I gotta watch this show before - Your time but, but yeah when you say you know, these main guide program for years was folks would come in from away and they needed somebody to show 'em around.
Yeah, show 'em what to do and fly.
Rod Crosby was one of the most proficient fly fishermen.
Okay.
Fly Fisher women.
And she thought, you know, some of her knowledge ought to be recognized formally and they started the whole main guide program.
She was the first one to make it.
That's amazing.
Anyway, watch bores.
You'll find out.
I'm gonna have to, yeah.
Drew Laal comes Mason Pelletier Pelletier Spin Dribbles on Harry Lewis.
Not sure if that was Lewis's foul.
- It might be on short.
We'll see here on the spin.
See what he wants to do.
2, 4, 1 short.
Yeah.
Spins inside Levi Short on the fall chest left arm.
Yeah.
Easy call there.
Number 24 - In credit to Pier, he is trying to take the ball to the basket and he does shooting.
- This hasn't been easy.
He is got 21 points, but nothing has come easy, as you said in the pregame.
Make it difficult.
They have, they have the next high score because they could fuck Room was six bug me, sorry.
Apart from his eighth bug me was six.
But it's been too little offensively as you noted.
Bally's gonna try to get in the sixties, seventies and eighties.
And they've done that today.
- Well he didn't have to be Nostradamus, but War said beautiful pass.
He didn't want a game in the sixties.
He said we don't generally score 60.
Right, because if we do number 32 in blue Mason, Pelletier is gonna score a ton of points.
Where would the rest of the points come from?
There's Peir going up and they're gonna say Player control or excuse Mackey Player control foul.
- Yeah.
Lewis cut the pink shoes in front of the offensive player you see here.
Clip down the lane comes Mackey watch the quickness.
Beat him to the spot, lowers the shoulder.
Great defensive there.
Always good to see the offensive guys willing to play defense.
And Harry Lewis does just that.
- Alice guards Lewis who gives the ball up to Nichols short and they're gonna say a foul in the shooting action.
Been - Really impressed with this valley.
I don't wanna call it stall game because they're not stalling, but they're giving the impression they might drawing everybody up.
We'll hold the ball if we need to.
And then attack.
And they've got layup after layup with this strategy here in the fourth.
- Another eighth grader on the floor for the Valley Cavaliers number 15.
Bryce Hartwell - Will settle in.
They're gonna be on this floor for the next four years after this.
- Well for the regional maybe, but if they get to the state game, they're gonna have to flip off something.
That's - Right.
Every once in a, - I'm gonna Bangor - Travel to Bangor every other year.
Maybe - Get to Portland.
- That makes us old Dave.
We remember the dads.
There's many things that make us old.
Think.
- Yeah, I was gonna say but now with Gordon Hartwell, we're remembering the grandfather.
- That's absolutely right.
Hey.
- Oh - Man Gordy, - You look great.
Yeah, Pelletier comes to ome, hands it back to Pelletier.
Short stays right with him.
Fisher Tewksbury picks up the loose ball Louis to Nichols to Tewksbury Bury.
And they're gonna say, Mackey on the - Foul.
Yeah, great job.
Got the ball.
Double team against Lewis.
Got the ball to the corner.
Tewkesbury down the lane.
Makes a nice catch here on a bounce pass from Nichols.
And you see the contact, take your pick.
There they went.
Toby, not Macie.
Could've been either one of them, - Although Mackey was in the vicinity.
- Yeah, he, he got him with a hip check, but I think it was across the arm from Bugbee.
- The building has been rather quiet since about midway through the first quarter as Valley established that they could, they could score - On Easton.
Now these Valley fans are, have been here for a while.
Had to watch the girls win the first one.
Boy's gonna win a second that looks like and travel back with a couple gold balls on the bus.
- Well Warren was saying that he thought with the other Rooster County teams coming in here, that a lot of the folks on the eastern side would stay behind.
So they could see the Fort Kent game for example.
And why not?
Pelletier flips to Bugbee back to Pelletier and they're gonna see he got fouled 3 44 to go fourth quarter.
You see everything you need to know for information on the bottom of the screen.
- I got a bump from behind by Levi Short as bury again up about the rim of the block.
But it was on the floor the before here at the line shooting.
- Barry Lewis is signaling to Mike Staples that he'd like to come out.
Well he is coming in for somebody.
Mike Staples says, no you're not coming out.
Leave my shorts going out.
- Okay.
I'm sure they'll be able to give Berry and Lewis - A final ovation, whatever there.
David Bus shot another eighth grader on the floor for Valley Pelletier loose ball.
Oh nice.
Didn't move on.
Harry Lewis.
Block by Lewis.
Picked up by Lewis around Ellis by Lewis.
Fouled by Ellis.
- Impressive date with a block on Pelletier who had a great spin move to get by him, but he recovered, blocked it and then got bumped as he was trying to get out and transition again.
25 point game.
Easton filed the number 12 getting the third quarter.
Easton played some great defense.
Three rallied offensively, but too much Valley, too much of that guy right there on your screen.
Harry Lewis, - Freshman Braden lay in the game, has the ball on the dribble.
Ellis stays with him, gives the ball back to Harry Lewis.
Good choice.
And Ellis on the blocking foul, we're gonna be shooting and Lewis will go on the line.
- See the bump here is Elli.
Tries to get there.
Reaches across pretty easy fo there for Elkins Chance to meet Harry Lewis.
He's good friends with Parker Moore and our quarterback and Tony.
And he played a lot of travel basketball and if the Fitzpatrick ceremony, Parker invited Harry and he and his family came down, so Oh nice.
Yeah.
Very good kid.
They go way back.
A couple of good basketball players.
I think Bury is on some of those travel teams as well.
So I'm sure Parker's here somewhere supporting.
I saw Parker's mother.
So a little Coney Valley connection is, - Well I would think that if Morin had needed somebody to throw the ball to, - You're not kidding, - Harry Lewis might have might've challenged him.
- I asked a couple years ago, any chance you can have an extra room at your house?
Yeah, because I do.
- Cochran the three, no Peir can't get the rebound, but Fisher Tewkesbury can.
We're coming down to three minutes to play.
- Want a rebound from Tewkesbury.
Just a great effort.
Exactly what you described as to workman's type game.
Rebounds.
Block.
Just solid.
Yep.
- Mason Pelletier takes a look at Harry Lewis puts it up.
Banks at home.
- Nice take there.
Head Ellis on the right hand side.
Macy Pier defense sagged enough, he just went over the rim.
- And to his credit, I don't believe Harry Lewis really wanted to be run into, - Not at this point - That that has happened.
And it wasn't as much fun as it look.
Loose Ball picked up by Fisher Bury, what else?
- What's it in?
Bury And Bryce Hartwell is gonna ask for an assist there.
I might have lost it off his foot, but he's gonna ask for an assist when they sta this game out.
- Ellis runs away from Lewis Elevates, makes no, doesn't make on the Putback Tom King, a freshman for the Bears.
We're gonna go to the line, - See the offensive rebound there off the shot.
That was halfway down a foul there.
- Rally 13, - Another er, - Personal file number one T, file number three, - Couple subs at the table.
Me, Mr.
Thomas, king Lewis.
And it looks like it's gonna be there.
They come for the final time.
- Fisher, Toews, Barry, Harry Lewis, step out of the game.
I'm surprised there aren't more people standing on the valley side as those kids were huge in today's game and probably all season they, they averaged in double figures - Both.
Thousand point scorers.
They both got their last year's Juniors.
- Hartwell ahead.
Bouchard on the Putback.
No good.
Pelletier still on the floor for the Eastern Bears.
Comes to Cochran Cochrane for three.
No Blue Ball picked up by Braden.
Andrews a freshman.
This is good experience for these kids.
Oh, - Question.
We are up at end.
Big guy's got good hands underneath.
Missed the first time that time he converts.
You're gonna get a time out here to get some subs.
- 75, 46, 1 36 to play in the fourth.
Just a reminder as you exit today, but as you can understand, awarded at the end of March, if they're, they're, they're facing the starters in practice and that ball is flying around the gym the way it is, they can't help but pick up some of that knowing how to run the offense.
So the Bouchard, if he goes weak side and, and he's in the dunk spot, if they refer to Dunk, he's there, he's open, put in the basket.
- Absolutely.
And that stuff just rubs off.
And that's when you have a great program.
It's the older guys are great.
They're kind of teaching the younger guys or through osmosis.
They pick it up and you kind of keep that tradition going.
And that's what Valley Basketball's done for a long time and looks like they're set up to win some music moving forward.
Well, - PI Gibson was hero status and Bingham came by and during the first game and he had a list of all of the games that he did on Valley Boys and Girls coming up through the state tournament and the regional tournament going back to the early 1990s.
And it, you know, not quite as long as his arm, but he'd used a larger font.
It would've been - Got a lot of tradition there.
Certainly on the boys side.
Girls are starting to get there.
They want want two outta the last three titles I think and set up to win some more.
- Coming down to one minute to play here.
Lay - Puts little scoop shot Braden Lay the freshman goes with the left hand Braden Lay.
Okay, Vale's gonna bring back the starters.
So I'm, I'm a little confused.
I must have and the game on the floor I guess.
- Yeah, and the season on the form.
Might have to take a time out to do it though.
Okay, now Mike Staples is taking the time out.
Wants a 30, but I don't know if he really needs it.
- I'm trying to remember if I've ever seen this day when you put the starters back in to dribble it out, I guess it's Valley Faithful.
- Stand in applaud.

Thank you for being with us this afternoon for the first two games.
We've got two more games coming in after this one.
The Class C State championship games, the class Class D and Class C in here today.
Harry Lewis on the Dribble last few seconds.
Colin Nichols hanging onto it.
No need to foul them.
Harry Lewis.
And the ball goes almost to the ceiling.
The Valley Cavaliers are your state Class S boys champions.
- Very, we loose threw that one almost through the roof as the Valley Cavalier Celebrate a much anticipated and a hard fought state championship victory.
Be motion right there on Tutbury.
- True Laro.
Two points.
- Well you know, - Jamie McKay, four Points.
- It matters especially poignantly to the seniors rated Cochran eight points the next time they put on that uniform.
It's gonna be an alumni game and it's, it's a big deal.
- Absolutely.
Any state championship, any sport, I don't care what it is.
That's a big deal for your community - And, and when you're, when you're the eighth and ninth and 10th graders, you think, oh, we're coming back every year.
It's not always that easy.
Eventually - It runs out and it's the last chance for these guys and they capitalized.
They, you see their prize - Team McClain.
Seven points.
Levi Short, 12 points Fisher to Barry.
19 points - Modest game for Fisher to Barry.
29 - Points.
- 29 points.
Harry Lewis, Harry Lewis.
Woo.
And he made it look pretty easy given his quickness.
- Yeah, he hit a couple threes, but a lot of it in transition and a bunch of it from the free throw stripe.
He just really earned his way there and made them pay.
- I think we're ready for the awarding of the Gold Ball.
Ladies, gentlemen, and the individual recognition.

Class S Boys basketball championship to Valley High School.
- Happy - Group of Cavaliers right there.
Beal.
- It's almost like they choreographed that they like, they then raised it up as hop.
He announced it.
That - Was well done.
Congratulations to the Valley Cavaliers and to the Eastern Bears.
We'll talk with the victors when we return.
Don't go away folks.

- The environment is just awesome.
- Great campus, small - Close knit - Community.
- Everyone's really welcoming.
Everything feels very personal.
We feel like you belong here.
- See the Cavaliers ascending the the ladder.
They might do the same thing that the girls did just about an hour and 20 minutes ago.
Each kid gave getting a turn to wave the - Yeah, it's become the new friend.
Yeah, they did that last night up in Bangalore and so they cut 'em down and then they send them up.
They were in no hurry to leave this floor because they just culminated a pretty impressive season.
I mentioned they, they challenged themselves in the regular season.
Played Monmouth, who's playing here in a minute for the state championship.
The D Class D. They played Dale who was a really good team in Class C this year.
And all of her, you know, sort of toughening them up for a game like tonight and board the payoff.
Pay off.
- Well you know if you're gonna run the bus anyway.
- Right, exactly.
You gotta drive somewhere.
- You gotta go somewhere and you might as well test yourself and yes, I think didn't they split with Monmouth?
- They might have, yeah, I, let me see.
- Might have beaten 'em, but you know, Monmouth had a good year obviously.
- I think I only see one with Monmouth.
They lost at Monmouth of course.
But they were at Dale at Richmond.
No, he split with Dale.
That's what it is.
Yeah.
They beat Dale at home.
58 49.
So there is Fisher Tewkesbury and there's Harry Lewis.
Great smile they have from the senior.
- Yeah.
We've seen them, you know, if they came up with perhaps a team that had more height, more defensive prowess maybe.
- Maybe.
- But the way they move the ball, it's, it's, it's a nice game of basketball.
- It is for sure.
And the, the transition offense in the first half, second half, they kinda resorted to spreading the floor, finding the seams and distributing through the, through Harry Lewis.
And they got multiple kids that can do that.
And he, as you mentioned, getting some other kids, there's, so hit yourself in the forehead there a couple times.
Cameron Lace.
Some of these guys aren't veterans at this yet.
They're his harwell, the Harwell boys.
- And, and you know what's gonna feel empty is when they go to school on Monday and there's no practice.
I know that's a, that's a bad - Feeling.
You - Know, you I've been there.
- What - Do we do now?
It's been so much of a focus of their energy, their attention.
Oh my goodness.
Obviously their identity.
These guys will be together for the rest of their lives.
- Absolutely.
See the eighth graders spending it there and although Coach Staples can't lead practice next week, but, you know, but they'll probably be practicing the guys that are coming back, I'm sure up in Valley.
This is a lot of what they do.
- Yeah.
And they'll, I need's advice every couple weeks they'll put a summer program together.
Oh - Yeah.
- Actually both schools will, because you, as you know, with with your program, you can't afford not to.
- Yeah.
You gotta do something in the summer, whether it's lifting or practicing once in a while you see they're trying to get Harry Lewis ready, draping the net over him.
He's got the gold ball.
All the state championship signs.
Now the Hammond Lumber provides pretty cool when he win a state championship.
- I planted a seed with them that they'd come over and ask you to autograph them.
- Harry Lewis Coaching Radio.
See, we're gonna bite the, the metals.
Yeah.
We're gonna hold up one finger.
We've been wor waiting on this, this for five years, fellas, we're gonna do this.
Right.
One take, - And as you said, you know, you got a variety of colors in the footwear.
Absolutely.
Anyway, - That's a good shot there.
Class - D games are waiting to come in and Brandon Terrell and Karen Magnusson will bring those home for you.
Again, two games down with four games to go here and two games to go in Portland.
- Karen Magnuson's gonna announce two and then be the world's biggest fan in the nightcap here from America Play.
- Just, yeah, that's - Shot right there.
- While back I, her husband Travis Magnusson, one of the outstanding basketball players in Georgia's Valley history, we were talking about, you know, girls' basketball in particular.
And he said, you know, the thing is, you know, if a girl really wants to play high school basketball in Maine, you work at it hard enough and you'll get that opportunity.
And we've seen that over and over again.
They, you know, do one thing well, do two things.
Well, if you, if you wind up being Leanna Hartwell, maybe you do all things well, but you need the complimentary players.
- Absolutely.
And that's - What these programs find is a complimentary players.
- No question.
You can't make that decision in eighth grade.
They change so much once they get to high school and the weight program and a lot can change.
And if you do it well, you do what Valley did today.
Sweep the girls, then the boys as they head down to Ethan Snow.
- So as you see in our long shot here, they're beginning to cluster around Ethan Snow.
Let's go talk to the Valley Cavaliers.
- All right, well I'm down here with a victorious group of Valley Cavaliers who are state champions for the first time in a decade.
Harry Lewis, we'll start with you.
My friend won a game for you on the biggest stage, 21 points in the first half, 29 total for the game.
What was your mindset coming into the contest today?
And then how did it kinda shift through as the game went on?
- Yeah, you know, I, I just came out wanting to win, did what I have to do.
And then, like you said, second half slowed it down a little bit.
They had to pressure us so I knew if we just controlled the game then we'd come out with the win.
- Alright.
And the other man who's been the one two punch for this valley team all season long, Fisher Tooth, Barry Fisher.
You added on 19 points as well.
Same question for you.
What was your mindset coming into the contest and how did it shift throughout the game when Easter went on a run, you guys did just enough to squash it, go on a run of your own.
What was your mindset throughout the contest?
- Our mindset really never changed.
You know, coach just took us into the locker room, said that we wanted it more, you know, we've, we've worked too hard to get to this point and not come out with a gold ball.
And that's what we did.
We went out with and saying that we were down by 10, you know, kind of giving us that mindset that we, we gotta come out fighting, you know, this team was hard.
They like to fight back, you know, they're kind of notorious for it, so we gotta come out fighting.
And we went on that little run and we knew it was ours.
- It's gonna be quite the party in Bingham this weekend, gentlemen.
And of course your, your fellow classmates just took home a gold ball on the girl side just a little while ago.
Is there, was there any sort of friendly competition between your two teams for as good as you both have been this season?
Or obviously you're both cheering each other wrong?
What was that kinda like throughout the year?
We'll start with you Harry.
- Yeah, I just like to say they have their job.
We have ours.
That, that's all I have to say - Colin.
- You got it.
We support them.
They support us.
That's end of the story.
- Alright, well you guys will enjoy it just alongside the girls team.
One more question for all you gentlemen.
Tell the camera what it's like to be state champions for the first time.
It's a 2016 - Dave - Coach back - To you.
Thank you very much Ethan.
Congratulations to the Valley Cavaliers and at Eastern Bears.
Phil, glad to work with you as always.
Yeah, you get to hang around.
You've got the D game coming up.
- I've got the D game and there's some pretty good athletes in that game as well.
Looking forward to that.
But the girls have to play first.
- Yep.
And we'll have Brendan Terrell and Karen Magnusson back with you as main public televisions telecast of the state championship basketball games continues here from the Augusta Civic Center.
Thank you for joining us, but don't go away.
