From the Cross Insurance Arena in Portland, it's the MPA boys Class B state championship presented by Wear Butler.
Between the Caribou Vikings and the York Wildcats.
And good afternoon, everybody.
Welcome inside a very electric cross insurance arena here in downtown Portland for the class B state championship game.
I'm Rob Kennedy along with Jared Richmond.
It's the York Wildcats and the Caribou Vikings.
And on the road 350 miles between these two teams on the hardwood, not nearly that much separates them.
Absolutely not.
These are the top two offenses in class B this year.
Number one.
Number two, not just in their region, Rob, but statewide we're in for a high electric, high flying high scoring affair here this afternoon.
Campbell has made the trip down from the county.
We'll talk to their head coach first.
Our sideline reporter Greg Levinsky is standing by.
Coach a tough act to follow in terms of dramatics, but what are you looking for from your Cariboo boys?
Yeah, I just want to come out with great energy.
You know?
We got to have great energy.
We got to be locked in on the details today.
We got to be disciplined on both sides of the ball.
I'm looking forward to it.
The boys are looking forward to it.
We've been, practicing all week.
We got down here yesterday and, I'm looking for a good battle from both teams.
What do you need a stop from or be aware of with York?
Yeah, we got to try to keep them out of the paint.
When they get in the paint, they do a lot of damage.
Not just inside, but outside as well.
You know, they try the extra defender, they kick it, they make the right plays 95% of the time.
And then in transition too, they do a lot of damage.
So we got to make sure we're slowing them down in those two areas.
All right.
Good luck.
Thank you.
Back to you guys.
Thanks a lot Greg.
And the Vikings got here by knocking off Belfast 7842 MDI in Orono.
And they're open for their first gold ball since 2020.
They went back to back in 2019 2020 for the Wildcats looking for their first title since 1991.
Coached by Matt Regan, they lost in the regional semis last year and haven't lost.
There's no they've been on a tear 21 and oh this season.
Really high electric game with the Dominic in the South Regional final, a ten point win for them.
They feel like they're trending in the right direction.
Some unfinished business from last year and they hope to do that here today.
Greg Levinsky has made his way down to the York bench.
Let's talk with him and head coach Matt Regan.
What a run it's been for your team so far.
How do you make sure it ends on a high note?
I think the kids are prepared.
We were able to get into the, Civic Center on Thursday, and get a good practice in on the different court.
But they've been focused all week.
You know, this group they wanted they know back in the year 2020, a lot of their brothers played on that same team.
So they know what it means to be here.
You don't get chances like this often.
What have you seen from caribou?
Caribou is very good.
They're.
They're quick.
They like to get out in transition like we do.
And I know that the Robins kid is, kind of.
They're big man.
He's.
It's about six, four, six, five, and, he's kind of a perimeter guy.
So we got a tough match up on him tonight.
Good luck.
Coach, back to you guys.
Thanks very much, Greg.
Now let's take a look at the Road to gold.
Oh, take a look here at Caribou and York.
We talked about their offense is right 72 points a game for the Vikings 67 for York.
Both number one in their respective divisions this year.
Number one and number two across the state.
Defensively they're also very stingy 47 and 48 points.
And you take a look at their regional final game.
Caribou a 4140 win over Orono Game-Winner at the free throw line with less than a second on the clock.
They're York looking to get their first football since 1991.
And caribou, they've had a lot of success in this building.
Even just moments ago.
They'd like to pick up another good ball last time they did that 2020.
Let's talk about some of the players real quickly came in.
Sergeant, a guy to watch for caribou didn't have a point against Orono.
You know that's probably not something is going to happen here today.
He did grab six rebounds but usually he's reliable for double digits.
Absolutely had nine points throughout the the regional tournament.
Also Tristan Robbins we talked about him a little bit.
You know six foot five.
He's a UMF commit.
He averaged 16.7 points in the tournament.
Going to be a tough assignment for York defensively Lucas Bouchard over on the other side.
Double figures in all three games for the Wildcats in the postseason.
Yeah they've also got some great guys around him Lucas Ketchum He averaged ten points a game in the regular season as well.
And then they've also got respect.
Cornell 21 points a game in the regular season.
He's a junior.
Had 19 points a game in the tournament.
Is he those 54 shirts too.
That's in honor of if he Sergeant who played in this 2020 caribou basketball team that won the state championship.
He passed away back in January, came in and Tyson are his cousin.
So they're honoring him today with those shirts.
So if caribou wasn't already on enough of a mission beforehand, certainly that's added to it.
Absolutely.
And, just the way that that last game ended, too, we were down there on the, the baseline there.
Kyle Corrigan, the head coach that was his niece who hit those game winning free throws for the Vikings in Game one of our afternoon session.
Well, it's time now to head down to the courtside P.A.
announcer and meet the Vikings and the Wildcats here in Portland.
As we get set to go here.
I guess you won't start.
The actual introductions of the clock hit zero.
It's always different at the different buildings and Augusta.
Usually with one minute to go, you kind of make sure that you've said your piece, because the PA will pick up right there.
Here in Portland, we're going to take it right down to 000.
The anticipation they're going to make, they're going to milk every last ounce of this, pregame, countdown on.
This is going to be just an entertaining game.
Two teams that want to get out and run, play up and down the floor and see a lot of athletes all over the place.
Great crowd here today.
You'll hear them all afternoon long and now we'll send it down the court side.

A junior.

Caribou is coached by Kyle Corrigan, assisted by Sawyer Duprey.
Ben Rosser, Parker Duprey and Dustin Dam.
Boys York is coached by Matthew Regan, assisted by Alex Hunter, Josh Irvine, and Luke McKay.
Should Luke Mackey.
So here we go.
42 games played between these two teams.
Just one loss, 41 and one combined record between the top seeded and B North Cariboo Vikings and a second seeded B South York Wildcats.
This should be a great one.
Sit back, relax and enjoy whatever you're watching today.
Caribou Fan York fan.
Anyone in between around the state of Maine and around the world.
Glad you're joining us here in Maine.
Public television.
Battle of 22 is to get things started on the tip.
We are underway.
It's controlled by the Vikings.
Oh, and Corrigan to get inside now it's Sergeant Damon.
Sergeant, open up with a shot quickly.
Here look two.
Oh what a great screen at the top right there.
Frees things up a good jumper to get things going Ryan Cummins with the basketball for the Wildcats.
It's like Ford got it back.
This is Jack Joyce Royce into the paint.
Step through.
Got it blocked.
Last touched by the Wildcats.
Corrigan was there to get a hand on that.
As is Braden's Russia for caribou.
Just a little congested down there.
Really good job of finding a decisive hands to knock that away Damon.
Sergeant.
Sergeant with it again.
They'll try to work that down low.
Robbins on the block will back out.
He just presents such a matchup problem inside at six five.
All right.
Robbins wants the three that will go the rebound to Ryan Cummins.
Here's Joyce.
All the way across.
Cummins again lost the handle had it stripped.
So his own four again again really good job early on by Campbell getting gaps.
Look out too easy for Tristian Robbins.
He's been in double digits all three games of the postseason.
And he's got terrible up for a great job running the floor, sneaking in behind the defense wide open underneath.
Easy transition.
Lay it for the Vikings Reese McDonald's 14 points in the deciding game.
In the finals against McDermott.
They back outside to Jack Joyce Joyce around a screen.
Little daylight here to exploit.
And that's exactly what he does.
Oh what a finish by Joyce.
Had all kinds of traffic to work through.
Elevates up high and finishes softly at the rim 41 points.
This might be the game for you Sergeant.
Outside Robins.
Bresha thought about the shot.
It'll do more than think about this one.
And he gets the shooter's roll.
Well, right away you can see the different ways that they can beat you, right?
Three different scorers.
Everyone talks about Tristan Robins but balance right out of the gate here for caribou.
Cummins handling the basketball.
He's got on Corrigan right there Ryan Cummins couldn't work inside or reset Joyce with it again.
He spins.
We have our first violation a traveling call against York.
Well that's really good defense up top there.
Braden Brashear just up there close making it uncomfortable using his body to head you not his hands.
Sergeant picked up by Joyce.
Sergeant trying to shake him.
Lost the handle.
Russia back outside as Robin sets things back up for the Vikings.
Good job here.
Just to settle back down, Sergeant.
Shot off line.
That's Lucas Bouchard skying for the rebound.
Race McDonald's.
Bouchard on the block.
Gets me a great battle all day with and Robinson.
Give it to number 22 and Wyatt.
And that's a little battle.
Oh is it ever I was thinking just as he was backing him down.
That's kind of some old school back to the basket post play.
A lot of fun to watch that Robins outside.
He's not afraid to shoot the three.
He's got a couple here in the postseason.
That's where he's a bit more comfortable.
Couldn't make that shot.
That's got to go right back to Cariboo as Lucas catch for this on the baseline.
Yeah he sure has position on the rebound.
Slaps it down to Ketchum.
But Ketchum and never full awareness of where he was.
He'll on the baseline and stays down here with the Vikings.
Sergeant outside try to feed right back in.
And did robins off the glass for two.
What patience inside by robins wins.
The face cut.
Gets down on the low.
Block up fake.
Lets the defender go by and finishes high.
Cummins trying to turn on the Jets there.
But Corrigan's got just as much turbo as he does.
And little misstep that's going to turn it back over to caribou.
Oh this time is he just gets right out in front of them.
Isn't centered, isn't balanced.
And that's what causes the travel in the center of the lane.
Where the ball.
Oh.
Pressure crossing the timeline for the Vikings.
And in Ballinger a junior.
Logan back to brush up front Allen Corrigan again.
Robins 40 for three off the back iron.
The rebound popped all the way out to catch up.
Here come the Wildcats Reese McDonald the pass underneath reverse layup.
No close for Joyce.
Rebound McDonald.
Yes.
Really great job on the offensive glass by McDonald to work and navigate his way around Robinson there.
And put it up for two.
And then Belanger cutting to the bucket.
The scoop is good.
Oh my goodness what a finish there comes across the lane.
Soft touch again I love how caribou gets downhill with force and finishes soft at the rim.
Oh point lead for the Vikings back Joyce to Lucas Ketchum.
Coming into that off down low.
Now the reverse layup.
This time it's Lucas Bouchard for two.
He had 15 in the regional tournament.
He is just really tough to defend down there.
But smart defense to not commit fouls early.
You'll can see the layup for a foul here in the first quarter.
Charging.
Trying to work on Joyce outside.
Robins doesn't want the three this time.
Russia will take it.
It's off line.
No rebound all by himself.
Jack Joyce Bouchard's one hand pass underneath.
Picture perfect and the finish for Ketchum.
A great job running the floor getting it done with the pass.
Foul call the first one of the game we played five minutes and 12 seconds.
Well I think both teams right now are doing the right thing and they're playing aggressive enough defense but not getting in foul position knowing you know it's the long game.
It's not the short game here.
Alex Taylor into the game for York for sub off either team's bench.
Oh Ryan Cummins was called for the foul for again.
Launch is rattles out and the rebound for Joyce.
Taylor just in the game.
Just that off the catch him and it will count is coming to the hole Alex Taylor he's stepped on the black paint.
Yeah.
Can't leave the floor on your own volition there.
Take a look at the replay.
He's just going to right there still out of bounds.
Can't come back in.
Great camera angle.
Great pickup on that.
Great give and go.
The right play to make.
Just ran out of space on the baseline was John Roberts.
Game.
And Sergeant Robbins called for they went to Russia instead Russia worked out outside to sergeant again.
Robbins we're going to take on Ketchum and we got clear control foul.
Oh, Ketchum does a good job at six five to get in front.
Got the pass off there and get a foul against Tristan Robbins.
Take a look here again.
He spins down the middle gets enough contact there with his back on his stomach.
The defense inside Robbie Hanson with the basketball.
Just checked in for the Wildcats have made two subs now.
Cummins.
Cummins has a little difficulty getting by Corrigan but does work down on the block.
The return pass Cummins outside is a three on the way.
No good for Hanscom.
A foul on the rebound.
Push called against Lucas Ketchum.
Yeah I think you're gonna see Ketchum.
Oh it's going to be.
Oh you're fired.
It's on Robbins.
The way Ketchum reacted, I thought it was going to be on him as we see Colby.
Will that come in from a 33?
Well, that's a big foul.
Now that's two on Robbins and put him on the bench.
Reese McDonell in bounds to catch up.
McDonald clock from 14ft hits.
Oh my goodness what a great job there.
Variation on America's play.
Everyone thinks it's going to be that corner three takes a couple dribbles to the middle and knocks down the mid-range.
Charging inside the shot wouldn't have counted.
The foul will be called against Robbie Hanscom.
He's just got to keep him in front.
No need to read.
You can set up a little bit out here in space.
The further away he is from the basket, the more space you can give him.
There.
And you got his hips square with the defender.
It's never a good place if you're playing defense.
Corrigan inbounds the basketball to Belanger.
Back to Corrigan not giving him that shot, that's for sure.
Here's the three from the other side though.
It's the back iron from the sergeant.
The rebound the put back is good Landon Ballinger.
Oh right spot right time Ballinger.
They try to swat it back up the Florida York and he's right there to get it McDonald tried to fire it underneath.
Got it back off.
It was knocked away by Sergeant Joyce.
Spins shoots hits.
Wow how fun is this first quarter.
That's the kind of game it's going to be.
Sergeant defended by Joyce.
Oh and Corrigan.
Passing off to Belanger.
Claussen Saint-Pierre regains the handle.
Sergeant stops but shoots wide on the rebound.
Quick outlet, here's Alex Taylor.
Great work from behind by Cora.
You get a hand on that.
Foul call here.
Yeah.
They're going to get Taylor here on the floor for the foul.
But like you said tremendous hands to chase that thing down from behind and tip it away as we take a look.
Just a great hustle.
Play two on one Morgan gets his hand in there and then they dive on the floor for it.
Under 30 to go in the first quarter a two point lead and it's over and back.
That's just a tough spot right there to try and use any kind of dribble move.
There's just enough space that you feel like you're comfortable to do that.
Got all three points of contact over both feet in the ball.
Really a tough turnover to take there at center court 26.8 seconds to go.
You see the time York with the lead the ball and they do it.
The possession arrow.
Let's see if they'll try to kill the remaining 25.
And that's answered right away right off the miss the rebound Saint Pierre almost stolen back at least McDonald came very close but couldn't hold on to it.
I feel like Kemba's got to get back to the center of the floor a little bit coming up.
You know, that's a really tough spot there.
It's a natural trap area and York's done a good job of creating pressure in that spot.
Quick ball movement by the Vikings.
Let pass down low down core again outside to sergeant again.
Dawson.
Saint Pierre for three.
That was a miss.
Still second or so for the Wildcats to work.
And that was not far off from Reese McDonald a York left to be satisfied with a two point lead after eight minutes of basketball.
We'll come back to the second quarter here in Portland right after this.
I mean, public television.

Great campus.
Small, close knit community.
Everyone's really welcoming.
Everything feels very personal.
Feel like you belong here.
Now there's Jack Joyce standing right in front of us.
Is going to get the basketball to start things off here in the second quarter, as the Wildcats have two point lead and possession.
Glad you're joining us here in Portland I'm Rob Kennedy along with Jared Richmond.
We can actually by turn around wait for the camera right now if we wanted to.
But I do think I got a haircut.
It's kind of taking care of that little bear patch back there, but I grabbed a little bit of everything except for free throws.
Both teams playing physical but not putting guys on the line.
That's important early, but the two on Sanders is going to be a Robin's.
There's going to be one to watch Jack Joyce outside now it's catchable.
No threes in this game yet either.
Couple attempts.
Joyce shooting for two.
That's no good.
Up in the rafters with the rebound Landon Belanger.
Here's the quick outlet to Sergeant.
Sergeant.
No way inside.
And a couple of Wildcats there.
Most notably Reese McDonald.
Was a big sequence here.
But to do this with with Robins on the bench how long can you play chicken with him.
There's your first three right there.
Here it is a perfect shot.
Came in Sergeant lets it fly and caribou jumps back in front.
Come in.
Steps into the paint.
Too high.
Now the rebound for Bellinger wanted the quick outlet.
He had Corrigan down court but what a risky pass.
Well smarter.
Just get the rebound earned possession and then run a half court offense.
Don't try and force the issue when it's not there.
Score again Sergeant.
Three more on that time.
And the rebound to Joyce Joyce pushes the basketball himself.
Foul.
Dawson Saint Pierre he'll get called.
Oh this is a big sequence too because you've got a couple of guys six six and six five and Bouchard and Ketchum on the floor that you have to defend right now without your big guy.
Robin's in the game right now for York.
It's just continue doing what we're doing here.
I like when they're two man game.
Their give and go action has been phenomenal here in the first quarter.
Keep that going.
Cummins with a step inch the bucket.
What do I know.
How about create a triple gap for Cummins to just drive down the right side uncontested one quarter get outside Belanger.
Great crowd here inside the building.
See all those York fans Caribou's got the whole side filled in behind us.
Two Corrigan for three being.
Well he talked about no threes in the first quarter.
How about two in the second quarter now for caribou.
And they're up two games and go back and forth quite a bit.
You just have that feeling.
It's been a tremendous championship weekend so far.
All the games have been phenomenal.
And this one continues to live up to the billing speed and power.
Amends with three.
Vikings is past a bit overcooked for Joyce.
Caribou with the basketball again.
Colby will let.
Saint Pierre.
Game and Sergeant again as well let left alone.
Sergeant into the pace shot won't go the rebound.
He stopped at a foul call and it'll go against Colby.
Will that.
Yeah.
He comes in late on the rebounding action flies into the back of Ketchum I think it was.
Take a look here on the replay.
Wasn't Ketchum that was Bouchard underneath but really good positioning there by the Wildcat.
This McDonald's little fade away from the elbow.
Not quite another rebound for Landen Belanger.
Well rebounding right now has been phenomenal for caribou.
They're making sure it's one and done.
On the offensive end for York.
They found a way to extend a couple possessions down here.
Almond Sergeant A little floater won't go.
Jack Joyce again into the corner.
And McDonald's.
He was on the sideline just a little wide to again.
Sometimes you just lose track of where you might be in this building.
You know York played in the expo all week last week.
And caribou obviously up at the Cross Center in Bangor.
32nd timeout taken here 32nd time out taken by caribou.
First time out of the game called by either team.
Vikings trying to pull off a two for here.
The girls one earlier.
The guys trying to take two gold balls back home on the bus all the way up top of the state.
Well good start to the quarter here for the Vikings A62 run.
And they're doing it out with without their big guy Tristan Robbins on the floor as well.
Season native high school quiz show Maine returns on Thursday March 20th.

It all starts Thursday, March 20th and 8 p.m. on Maine Public Television.
Little change up here for York now they're going to apply some full-court pressure trying to change the tempo of the game a little bit.
And handling the basketball has got Ryan Cummings guarding him.
Sergeant.
Hill back off choice.
Explore some options and call teammates out.
Let's head to the screen.
Sergeant.
Dawson.
Saint Pierre again to the rack.
No good.
And the rebound.
That time it was Lucas.
Catch him.
Taylor lost the handle.
Got it back nicely.
Joyce didn't want the shot.
Too many Vikings.
They're defending.
Well, the best thing here are two for Caribous.
The game is shortening up and lessens the impact of not having robins out there will fall for Ketchum.
Guess who on the rebound Landon Belanger.
Great minutes from him.
Holy cow.
Just all over the place on the glass right now.
Sergeants rejected.
And that was Jack Joyce who got a pawn.
That's now York's playing some really really good half-court defense.
Here take a look at Jack Joyce.
Man up.
Gets over in front and gets the left hand up there and blocks the shot.
Really good defense to beat him down the lane and be in position with Bouchard back in the game.
Now for York.
Sergeant behind his back.
Rolling around the screen.
But the Wildcats pick that up quickly.
Oh and Corrigan.
Sergeant trying to work inside at Joyce.
Stuck to him.
Got around him.
The shot close, but no.
It's a great rebound by Bouchard in there.
York doing a really good job of allowing a long possession.
But coming away with the basketball regardless.
Bouchard to tie it.
He does.
Getting it done on both ends of the floor.
Nice little short corner jumper for Bouchard to not this thing up.
Bouchard almost stole that from Willette and finds the open man down low.
Dawson.
Saint Pierre lays it in for two.
It's starting to erupt back into a little bit of a run here.
Both teams kind of slowed it down here in the early part of the second quarter.
But a great find underneath for the Vikings.
Joyce and down low.
Bouchard two more.
No.
Now a quick outlet coming.
Oh and Corrigan caught in stride.
He hits the bucket.
Well you can see when caribou can get out and run on the off the defensive rebound.
It works.
They're trying to get it back quickly Reese McDonald missed the shot and he's fouled.
And he'll go to the line I like this from York.
Get back to that downhill action.
It was creating a lot of great stuff in that give and go that two men in that cut game that they had going get downhill first free throws of the day Kobe let's foul Reese McDonell at the line.
He's in very good from the free throw line here in the postseason 13 out of 15.
We'll get one more York as a team entering the game, shooting 74.2% from the line in the postseason.
Lucas Ketchum reenters for York.
Alex Taylor heads back to the Wildcats bench like.
Darnell a chance to make this a three point game.
And does.
Landon Belanger got the return.
Pass him in.
Off balance.
Sergeant.
Well, let.
Sergeant has the three off the iron and rebound by Robbie Hanscom.
He has come back quickly for York.
Couldn't find a way inside.
And a great battle going underneath right now.
Catch him for three.
No.
And the rebound snatched by Will.
That pass just over the fingers of Tristan Robbins possession.
Back to York.
Well, you can see here when caribou gets that defensive rebound they do a good job of leaking two guys out in the rebounding action.
And they have that quick movement up the floor just a little bit more offensive rebounding maybe from York but still not bad looks from the Wildcats.
Just haven't seen one go in in a little bit.
Game is flying with under two minutes to go in the first half.
Here's a three for the tie.
Yes Reese McDonald knots us up at 22.
Sometimes that's all it takes to see one go down hand in his face and makes the three ties it up for.
Western Robbins now Milan outside, trying to work around the screen and does a Langer takes it to the hole and scores.
And Andrews having himself a tremendous half.
He's getting it done on the defensive end with rebounding six points, finishing strong at the hole.
Great pass.
That was not an easy shot at all for Bouchard.
Couldn't get the rebound.
Now a two on one developing here a pass.
Good work by the Vikings to be patient here.
Recover and stay poised.
They will get rewarded with a bucket on that.
However they will get a trip to the line.
Caribou fans want a goaltending call.
Tristan Robbins lobbying for that as well will be two shots.
Come on Corrigan, we'll see it again.
Here, take a look underneath.
I think the ball's kind of still going up there, but I don't know if he really ever makes contact with it.
It's not above the rim.
I was going to say I don't know if he touched it.
It look, you know, the optics in real time maybe, but it's a good no call.
Oh, and Corrigan's 100% from the line here in the postseason course.
That's only his second free throw.
But hey, 100%.
And perfection still perfection.
Absolutely.
Great.
And Russia back in.
You take a look at the senior number one who just reentered the game.
Oregon shooting here for a four point lead.
Seven points in the quarter for him.
And now some pressure applied themselves.
And we get a turnover against York Vikings at the ball right back.
It's a big minute here a big possession for caribou for a couple of reasons.
One as we get a substitute you get Robbins back in the game here.
But you also get the possession arrow here up two possessions.
Can you extend this out to a three possession game and keep the arrow coming out of halftime?
Oh well, that was warmly greeted by the caribou bench after the minutes he just played plays to Tristan Robbins.
Where to sit a little bit of foul trouble.
He's got a couple Robbins 52 54 seconds to go.
But to survive without Robbins and get the lead.
That's a huge quarter here for caribou.
Regardless of what happens right in Russia, taking his time with 44 seconds to go up comes Bouchard to force the issue a little bit.
That's good defense out there in space by the big man Bouchard.
They're not always used to playing way that far out, but really good defense Kristen Roberts Russia over to help Kong for the basketball and receives it.
Everyone wants the last shot.
Now they have the lead and the arrow.
And I like the 15.
I like this from New York not taking any defensive chances here.
Don't want to pick up a silly foul here Sergeant.
Going to work.
Here comes the weave.
Corrigan for three.
No.
And the rebound is stolen now.
Old fallen.
It's going to be Caribou Basketball with point six seconds to go as Christian Robbins picks himself up off the deck.
Keep an eye on Tristan Robbins here.
He's got the size.
I would imagine that York is gonna try and double him here.
It's got to be like a catch and shoot or a tap, and it'll pass and tap kind of situation with 6/10 of a second left here.
Referees cleaning up the court.
One opportunity here now for Owen Corrigan.
He'll inbound the basketball for caribou.
Sergeant the quick shot.
Oh it was close.
Just missed off the iron.
And that's the way the first half will end.
The visitors from the North caribou have a four point lead here at halftime Journal.
I'll be back to talk about it right after this on Maine Public Television.

Busy day for the Caribou High School band.
They played at the first game.
And now here.
Number two is.
Both the boys and girls are down here to claim gold balls.
The girls have already done so in the boys.
A four point lead over York here at halftime.
Good one so far Jared.
Absolutely I love it.
You know it just feels like Lake York is right there with everything.
We take a look at some of our stats.
Look at the shooting percentage from York 53% from the floor.
When they're getting those looks they're great.
Caribou 50% nine of 18 free throws kind of a little bit of the difference.
But the real big difference for me.
The two made threes compared to the one.
But York's turn it over nine times.
And some of those turnovers have led to points the turnovers and then the rebounding as well down there for caribou.
Cambria did a really good job cleaning stuff up.
Talk about Landon Belanger in the minutes he had.
He was getting rebounds.
Had a great second quarter as well and running right there with nine times.
Yes, exactly nine times.
Greg Levinsky is down to our left.
He's roving the sidelines.
We'll send it to him right now.
Take it away Greg.
Yeah I'm here with Scott Hunter.
Michelle Drew for you guys are the captains of the 1983 caribou battle teams not won state titles.
First of all, what is it like seeing your school down here together?
Similar situation to over 40 years ago?
Yeah, it's, it's really awesome.
I still live in caribou.
And so to see the community come together again, it brings back a lot of memories.
You know, everyone's behind these kids, and Michelle and I also know how special it is and how hard it is to get a chance to play down here and a game like this.
I gotta admit, when the school song started playing and the girls came out, I had goosebumps.
So this show means something to a lot of people.
Where's it been like for you to watch your girls win?
They already won.
So unbelievable.
Like that game.
So proud.
The turn out here like it was back in 83.
So it's great the community support being here.
It was great.
Do you remember what it was like when you tasted that fur that victory.
When when the buzzer sounded like what was that feel like as a state champion?
Does it still resonate with you now?
Yeah.
So for the boys, we had been in the Eastern Maine finals for years in a row.
Three, three losses.
We finally got over the hump against Bangor and won that Eastern Maine final.
And when when the horn sounded then it was just unbelievable.
It was relief.
It was it was it was just, joy.
Pure joy.
And the town was behind us.
Unfortunately, when we went down to when we played South Portland in the state, we came up short and, lost that game.
One of our two All-State point guards was diagnosed with mononucleosis that week, and so we had to play without him.
No excuses.
South Portland was a great team.
But we had a great run in it, and it meant a lot to everybody.
Did you ever hear on.
Well, what was it?
What was it like on your team's run?
Well, I mean, we went in number six out of seven, so yeah, but we when we made it all the way to the state game, we beat Portland.
So I mean it was an unbelievable ride.
Something that I will never forget.
A lot of people, me included from southern Maine, you know, campus five hours from here.
But it sounds like basketball means so much to this community.
It sounds like basically everybody from caribou is here and at the home games.
3078 900 people.
What would you say basketball means to the community up there?
And how would you describe the town's relationship with the basketball programs?
I think from us, the time that I was a little kid and Mike Thurston made that a half court shot, the community has been basketball crazy.
There are long winters and basketball, something that brings people together.
You go to the gym and they get their season tickets and they're filling the gym again, and that's great.
And, basketball is king up there for sure.
Yeah, I remember just being in fifth and sixth grade and starting at the rec department and going from there, but it's been great.
Thank you both.
Really appreciate it.
Thank you guys.
Back to you guys.
Well, thanks very much, Greg.
And I think right there, that epitomizes exactly why this Maine basketball tournament is so special to so many people.
Just because it means so much to the communities care about.
And of course, now look at the York Wildcats cheering section.
Oh 100%.
I mean, this is you know, this two week stretch is the best time of year in the state of Maine for sports.
But community, you see people, you know, you and I hung out at a lot of the Augusta this week.
You see people you maybe see only once or twice a year.
And it just brings everybody out and the support for the teams and really making the young athletes now the superstars of the week and the communities have done that tenfold.

A four point lead for caribou here at the half A class B boys state championship game on Maine Public Television.
Antiques Roadshow is coming to Boothbay, Maine.

Holy smokes.
Wow.

Good luck.
You see the score here at Portland of the Cross Insurance Arena, the former Cumberland County Civic Center, and I still find myself saying that quite a bit.
There's the city of caribou.
Most of them anyway.
Seems like it.
That's quite dedication.
We just kind of heard in that interview with Greg Lipinski as far as what basketball means to caribou.
It's a five hour trip, and you already knew the minute that one team, let alone both teams, made that final, that they were going to get as many people down here as they could.
I mean, and they've been treated to some really great basketball today too.
You know, great game.
This one is a fantastic game as well.
But you know York is out in force as well.
We talked about it in the pregame.
I mean two teams that couldn't be separated by much more mileage than they already are.
But both communities out and strong for us, for them today and be been treated to a really good basketball game here.
Take a look at some of the individual numbers here.
And while we start with the Caribou Vikings I'll take a look at the scorebook here.
You know, 1 or 2 points for Braden Russia.
Five points for Cam and Sergeant, seven team high seven for Caden and for Owen Corrigan.
Rather, two for Dawson, Saint Pierre, linen, Ballinger.
Six points and four for Tristan Robins.
Remember he sat most of that second quarter.
So you know what they did with him and protecting him from foul trouble.
And he still scored four points a long way to go about 20s.
Can we run down the, individuals for York?
Absolutely.
Two for Lucas Ketchum, four for Jack Joyce, six for Lucas Bouchard.
And a team high eight for Reese McDonald.
Oh, halftime always go so quickly.
We'll take one more break when we come back.
It's the second half here in Portland.

Vikings cheerleaders here at happy at halftime with a four point lead over York.
And this is the first time the Caribou and York have faced each other in the postseason.
Not the first time you've had Vikings in New York, though, and it'll go back a ways.
867 The Battle of York, one of the most important Viking invasions in England, one decisively by the Vikings.
This one's not turning out that way at all.
This one's very, very even.
I believe they called the Viking army the heathen army.
It was the heathen army.
Yes.
So, yeah, but this has been a really good contest.
A little less violent, I think, than probably the Battle of York.
Was the blood on the floor?
No, but, I mean, it's been good physical basketball.
One thing, you know, just kind of looking at some stats here at halftime.
Caribou nine defensive rebounds.
Only one offensive rebound for York.
They've got to start extending those possessions out.
Just a little bit here.
And the team that really isn't known for three point shooting only made seven threes in the regional tournament.
Did York in fact they didn't hit a three in their regional final against Dominic Valley.
So they want to keep this game 6 to 8 points.
They don't want to let it extend out and have to force themselves into that position here in the marine goal uniform starting in possession.
They're attacking the basket down to our left, York with a white and a Carolina blue sergeant rebound off the miss from Jack Joyce.
Joyce outside.
Here's a three on the way.
And it's good Lucas ketchup all of a sudden it's a one point game maybe here heard be on the way by about not making a lot of threes.
And how about this from the corner.
That's his second 40 of the tournament won against Spruce Mountain.
Oh that's a great pass down low and not easy finish for Owen Corrigan.
But he made it look easy.
Well care for his ability to get to the rack right now.
And finish is just really great because they cut hard.
They cut with purpose.
Catch them.
We'll defer to Joyce.
Catch him again into the paint.
A corner three on the way from Cummins.
No great position for the rebound Tristan Robbins Robbins and Bouchard are battling down there.
And you can see just a little bit of frustration for Bouchard.
Did not get the ball.
But smart choice to move it around.
There's a three on the way will go.
And the rebound Lucas Bouchard McDonough with great speed.
The floater.
Loco now rebounds grabbed again by Landon Belanger.
And he's got Corrigan for two.
Oh we saw this a lot in the first half.
Get the defensive rebound and hit the leak out 11 points for Owen Corrigan.
Likes by five.
Ketchum wants another three.
Not that time.
But the rebound came all the way out.
Cummins to first down low and won't go for Bouchard.
But he will to the line.
Shoot two.
Well they find him on this dive down here.
Finally an offensive rebound for York.
And that's a nice pass.
Able to seal the defender in from behind.
And slotting in.
And sends Bouchard to the deck.
Oh and Corrigan picked up for the foul.
Bouchard three for six from the free throw line in.
The tournament's coming into this game.
It's the first.
And if you can keep finding ways to get the ball down into Bouchard, either backing him down or on those cuts left lefty hits one out of two.
Landon Belanger grabs his millionth rebound.
It's John Roberts came in.
Sergeant let him off the bench and split a great game of 33.
The two bigs in the game now both Willette and Robinson they're.
Roberts.
Lucas Ketchum keeping close watch Robin cook him to the horn.
Hits.
Wow.
What a finish inside Lucas him gets caught here trying to block the shot but coming downhill.
This is what I liked a lot about what caribou did here.
And it's tough because you're getting sealed off on the backside there by Bouchard.
Bouchard is getting sealed off for Kristen Robins, the future UMF Beaver.
That's where they'll play next year at least.
The three point play in caribou by seven, their largest lead of the game.
Well, his first point since the first quarter.
Remember he had that foul trouble early.
Inserts himself back into the game scoring wise in a big way Ryan Cummins directing traffic come in.
Got his man in the air a couldn't finish off the glass Robbins grabbing the rebound.
The great take.
He did everything right.
Just a tough luck miss at the rim came in Sargent's kickout Robbins and Ketchum battling again.
That's just been a great horse fight to watch at three.
Very close.
Wouldn't quite drop over a ten point lead if it went down.
Joyce switched to the left hand.
Didn't get it.
Robbins the outlet.
Corrigan knocked that back to Belanger.
Belanger somehow kept possession and drew the foul.
Wow.
A lot happened in that sequence.
It's a really great job by Cummins to run down the floor.
They've been beat on this.
Niko gets his hands up and then keeps with the play.
Is able to tip it away and just kind of got put in the spin cycle.
A little tough there for Jack Joyce kind of here in sweet Georgia Brown on my head.
Watch him go down to the floor continuing his dribble and keeping possession.
Low key possession.
This time though.
This has been a really good shift here for Ryan Cummins.
First that defensive play transition stayed with it.
And eventually he does get rewarded with that steal.
He's been working so hard to get.
Seven point lead for caribou is going to get more tense as this game heads toward its conclusion.
Already won gold ball on the bus heading back to caribou.
The boys him removing goal would love to make it to their seven points to the good.
A lot of time left for Ryan Cummins in York.
As loose on the floor for Oregon with a steal.
Robbins passed it off Belanger for two on this transition game from caribou is just on point.
The way they move the ball up the floor with passes and not dribbles, it gets there quick and they find ways to finish.
Robbie Hanscom Joe was partially blocked by Robbins, padded to Corrigan.
Robbins stepping back behind the arc.
Oh, and Corrigan.
Sergeant.
Great crossover.
And two shots at the line.
That'll be on Robbie Hanscom.
Oh, caribou has had this look a couple of times.
Look how they're able to clear out space a lot of room.
Back to his right to drive down the lane for Sergeant.
Just this is on that.
Sounds like they got Hanson on the foul.
It was.
And one more for came in Sergeant.
Lucas Ketchum back in now for York.
Ryan Cummins will take a seat.
Here's the big senior also for the first time.
Really?
Today, there's a chance for a team to get the bonus.
Three fouls against York about halfway through the quarter as well.
Sergeant shooting for a ten point lead.
Either one foul rebound eventually picked up by Bouchard.
One of those two misses.
Sometimes there's a funny way of changing things around.
Caribous defense has been just so good as you see right there.
Linda Ballinger oh, on cue.
Oh, hit the free throw to win the North three of the regional tournament for them.
And he's doing a great job here defensively cleaning up the glass getting blocks making scores surging.
They dare him and he'll pay for it that time that was close.
Ryan Cummins reentering for York.
Oh now caribou is going to change things up.
Put some pressure on York.
Don't allow them to walk the ball up the floor.
They've done a really good job with their half court defense.
But you got to feel like they they want to kind of extend this out to a double digit lead here.
Apply some pressure, make York play at a pace that they haven't really had an opportunity to play out this afternoon.
Ryan Cummins little space explosive the hole.
Good defense there by Sergeant as he came there at the end.
And what an outlet and a better finish from Haugen.
It's the transition game right now for caribou.
They are dominating the defensive glass and then they fire back.
Tom Brady.
They pass right down the center of the floor wide open.
Let's take a look at this again right on cue.
Little skinny post pattern.
If you're a football guy and lays it up and in and everything's going the Vikings way right now.
And Regan taking a timeout here is his team down 11.
It's the biggest deficit they've faced here this afternoon.
Well for me if you're York it starts with you got to make some layups.
They've got quality looks.
They just have a bunch of misses right inside.
And then on top of that if we're going to miss it we've got to rebound it.
Because right now we're getting cleaned off the glass 17 defensive rebounds for caribou.
And I would venture to guess that's led to at least 12 points.
I think a big lineup is working very well for caribou as well.
Braden fresh has started the game.
He's a scrappy guard, excellent player.
But they brought Kobe will let him take his place using the two bigs down low with Robbins who has not added to his foul drop.
No, that's the thing.
Robbins has been very smart.
They were able to navigate that.
But that's exactly right.
They've they've thrown some big lineups out there that have really given York some trouble.
Now, some pressure here as Robbie Hanson the junior inbounds the basketball under three to go in the third quarter.
The Wildcats don't want this to slip away enough to make a heroic comeback.
We've seen a lot of that this weekend.
But you don't want to get down double digits and stay that way.
Going into the fourth.
Oh, and Corrigan's going to get caught watching here.
They set a nice high screen.
They're just trying to spill Bouchard down the lane.
They get beat on the face cut.
He's in a tough spot to defend that.
Ball catching by inbound.
The basketball.
Bouchard passed outside.
Cummins considered the three hands him couldn't penetrate.
Lucas Bouchard hit the ball well that well that did the defensive work.
Sergeant, shoot.
Say you left him alone in the elbow and they will pay dearly.
Well, I out of the floor feels like there's a lid over it for the Wildcats.
And right now it's as big as the ocean for the Vikings.
The foul called against the Vikings.
Great to see what Jeff Mercer was going to indicate.
There.
Lead a baker's dozen now for the Bulls.
Will watch this again.
Oh right there there's one.
And then yeah right there.
Gets them right up across the chest as Tristan Robbins foul.
That's three on him.
He picked up two quick ones in the first quarter but has not picked another one up.
Another one and two right now I remember he said a long portion of that second period as well.
McDonald's puts the brakes on finding a wide open man underneath.
And Ryan Cummins with the easy two.
Well, this is the same out-of-bounds play they ran earlier.
They run that corner.
Look.
Great save by Landon Belanger.
The lands are now open for three.
Kaboom.
It's a 14 point lead.
What has he not done for this Vikings team here today?
Hanscom thought about answering back Joyce into the paint he had to take on Belanger and lost it last trip down the floor.
Yorker that came out of bounds play, but much better job adjusting to it by the Vikings.
And then they hit the wide open three on the other end of the floor.
Eamonn Sergeant Vikings trying to pull away here in the third quarter.
And in Belanger lands are hounded there by McDonald.
He shook him.
Belanger the finger roll for two.
No clear control foul.
Oh on by Robbie Hanscom.
And sure we'll get another look at that.
I don't have to tell you how the people in caribou feel about that comes down the lane.
That's a good call right there.
Good job getting established.
That's that's a tough bang-bang play despite the Caribous that we're hearing right now.
Oh, that was a good call.
Oh thank God they call the timeout.
We can discuss that pun.
But one thing we lingering in the back of my head, if there's one thing we've learned all weekend, no lead is safe here on state Championship weekend.
But that's a call that you're going to look back on and you're going to want, you know, that could be one of those game changing moments, a great job hustling to get in position and draw the charge.
But now York, this is a huge possession for them here.
You know come down and you know down 14.
You're not going to get a all back in one possession.
But if you can get it under ten here in the next minute, 20 or even to a ten point game, you got to feel really good about where you're at.
You know, on the other end for caribou, just be relax.
We're doing the right things, but we've got to continue to be aggressive in the right ways.
They've done a great job of clearing out space for drives, and it puts York in a tough spot.
Do we defend the drive or do we find the kick out three because we had burned on both goal pressure now from the Vikings as Reese McDonald tries to inbound.
It's getting loud inside the cross Insurance arena.
Lucas catch him.
Catch him!
Traps.
How to get rid of it.
I found a friend and Ryan commits coming spinning.
Just could not escape the defensive pressure.
Dawson.
Saint Pierre was defending him.
Ends up with the basketball.
Another defensive rebound, another one and done for York.
Sergeant.
Corrigan.
Belanger.
Three more.
Yes.
Take a bow, son.
Eight points in the quarter for Ballinger.
Back to back threes.
He's a man possessed a 17 point lead.
And Joyce trying to pull three back.
Couldn't do so.
Great hustle on the rebound for Robbie Hanscom who drew that player control foul earlier McDonald working his way in and he was fouled.
They're going to get it on the floor here.
And it'll be in the bonus.
Going to get a couple of free throws here.
Came in sergeants.
We'll take a look.
It's going to be late.
Yeah.
Just reaching down in.
You got a hedge with your feet on your hands.
Close the elevator door completely.
Don't give him any place to go.
Make that a harder, a harder trap.
The split leaves McDonald at the line again.
He's very good from this spot all postseason long.
High.
Well, that's how it starts, right?
Journey of a thousand steps.
Be there a thousand miles thousand.
Any journey starts with one step.
Good recovery.
Thank you.
The Alex Taylor is about to check in but he can't do it yet.
He's going to come in for McDonald's.
16 seconds.
Caribou with the lead.
Looking to add on before the horn came in Sergeant.
Now Corrigan wants three of his own.
Doesn't fall.
Chance now for the Wildcats at the buzzer.
Jack Joyce two seconds.
One second.
There's the shot.
Is good.
If it goes no.
Off the iron and down to the hardwood.
Caribou by 14 here in Portland looking for the gold ball.

Jack Joyce standing right there just in front of me on the basketball once he's given permission to do so.
And the Wildcats trying to chip away the 16 point gap.
And as you mentioned, you can't get it all back.
And once Jared it's a little bit at a time.
Can't be watching the clock or thinking about the scoreboard.
Just take advantage of your possessions and make some stops.
Exactly.
It starts with a with a score here, a quality look said they forced the pass in.
It was last touched by Colby.
Will let and Robbins back in the game and coach Kyle Corrigan continue to go with that double big lineup with Willette and Robinson at the same time.
Well, the other thing that's doing is it's just making there's no place to drive inside.
If you're York, a team that wants to play from the inside, that'll be a fun replay.
We know our camera guy down there, but again, the big lineup like you mentioned Rob is just creating all kinds of congestion.
You know that York just wants to kind of get downhill.
I'll take a look at this right.
Oh my goodness.
Camera didn't even flinch I like that.
Oh yeah.
Player control falls wrong against and Corrigan again it's the extension of the forearm there.
So it doesn't fully negate that turnover on the other end of the floor.
But you're back to work here on offense.
Chip away one at a time.
High pass into the paint to me defenders there now the Wildcats forcing it.
Let's see where that goes.
It'll stay with caribou Landon Ballinger again.
Well you could hear Kyle Corrigan screaming for the time out there, but he's glad to have that one in his back pocket.
Still has four left.
But what a play by Bill Andrew.
He has had himself an absolutely fantastic afternoon here.
Watch him elevate and just be in the air forever.
Oh a shot wouldn't fall for him though.
Be poetic justice of the did but Cambridge sergeant forces the turnover.
Well McDonald had the rebound there and this got hung up in traffic.
Nowhere to go.
Drags his feet.
This is a very critical phase of the game right now for both teams.
Robins is the shot it was maybe impacted by Bouchard I don't you we got a tip on that or not.
But his presence certainly forced the missed.
Certainly got his hand up on the glass.
Yeah we heard that game.
And Sargent's a floater off the glass.
Yes.
It's turning into the Battle of York.
Airball 18.
Cambridge did such a great job of clearing out one hole half of the floor offensively.
Turn the corner.
Get downhill.
Layups come in.
Oh so close.
That's the way the second half has gone for the Wildcats everywhere but through the rim for them right now it hasn't been bad shots.
It hasn't been bad selection.
It's just been bad luck.
Sergeant Corrigan he'll reverse back behind the arc again trying to get rid of Ryan Cummins.
Instead he finds Sergeant.
He finds Will let.
Oh no it's going to be.
And that's a goaltending call.
They're going to call the foul on the foul I saw the two fingers step up.
Well I'll call again.
Once the goaltender you can see well he can send in the net which you're not supposed to do with the balls in the cylinder.
So he does have a case.
Oh yeah.
Oh that's 90%.
Yeah.
100% there.
You're not allowed to touch the net when the ball's in the cylinder like that.
Well, we will let's in a chance to hit him both on the line anyway.
We'll get one more.
Let's shooting for a 19 point lead and hits it.
Likings disappearing over the horizon.
York starting to run out of time.
Reverse layup.
No good.
They'll get Koby Willette for the foul.
Is he got hit in the head.
Cummins did.
It'll be three on him.
But again like you mentioned when they've gone with this big line up there with both Willette and Robbins in the game.
But there's nowhere to go underneath.
He just kind of pops him on the head there.
Second foul on Kobe will let Brian Cummins at the line shooting to every free throw.
Every chance to claw into this gap for York with the clock not moving is huge.
Well coming.
You just catch him back in, he'll replace Alex Taylor.
Jeff Burns will asking Cummins if he's finally kind of rubbing the top of his head there after he wore that one.
Lefty gets them both.
And now York's going to come up and they've got to just apply tremendous pressure here.
But Carver has done such a great job in transition today.
It will move the ball up the floor as well as any team does, not just in class B.
There's a foul called on Ketchum.
That's two fouls now on your and three on Ketchum.
But you kind of start to do this a little bit.
If you're trying to get closer to the bonus here.
Problem is they're taking on a caribou team that shot 70% from the line all throughout the tournament and in Bellingham.
And now Carver is going to be content again either that's been good quick transition or disciplined court offense from the Vikings.
Belanger there he is again that time.
Didn't want to challenge Lucas Bouchard here but won't force anything.
Belanger takes the pass took the shot.
No will let snow line.
He'll go to the line.
And one thing about the caribou guards when they're attacking, they're keeping their dribble.
They're not getting into the paint and freaking out.
They maintain their dribble.
You see here.
Here's another offensive rebound going up by his third.
Now on number three Ryan Cummins shooting two.
Well that's at the line.
50% in his last trip.
No problem with the first one Robby hands come.
You'll see him out of the picture here in a second.
Actually you won't.
He's in a stand out there by the center circle.
But he's in the game now.
The junior for York.
There he is.
Number ten.
Will be relaxed.
And some both.
Back to 19.
Here.
Still plenty of time to accomplish the things you want to.
If you're your quick.
Just got to have a couple start falling for you.
Maybe here for McDonald.
No.
Another rebound Landon Belanger.
He's just had an absolutely fantastic game rebounding nine rebounds for Belanger Robinson forced the short very heady play by the senior.
They're just going to continue to penetrate.
And if it's not there they're going to cycle back out.
Sergeant.
It was their.
What a great job.
Rotates up to his right.
Spins back hard to the left Vikings up 21.
Loose ball.
Well this big.
They'll have to talk about this.
It'll stay with York.
We'll look at Ryan Cummins.
He's about to come right back in here.
Replace Jack Joyce.
But that knock on the head earlier.
But he's okay.
One thing we haven't really talked about a lot here this afternoon Reese McDonald for York.
They've really kept him in check.
Only nine points now a turnover and a two on one.
Belanger has core again.
Oh Elantra.
Oh yeah.
When it's going good it's going great.
What a behind the back pass to finish a two on one.
That shot doesn't fall loose on the floor.
Who's going to get it.
The Vikings do.
Here they come again.
Belanger no.
Put back.
Yes Christian Robbins and the Vikings faithful are ecstatic and rightfully so.
It's it's a microcosm of this game.
All right there a great look from York.
Two thirds of the way down the cylinder as you see the caribou faithful going crazy leads to a defensive rebound.
Leads to a steal, leads to transition.
Leads to finishes.
As caribou is dominating every phase of this basketball game right now, the second half has been owned by the boys in maroon and gold.
They've only allowed 17 points since the second since the end of the first quarter, eight in the second, seven in the third, only two midway through the fourth year for York.
Tremendous defense by these Vikings and the Vikings have put York in a position they have not been in this year.
York undefeated only four games this year, well under ten points.
The closest was a 7264 win over green New Gloucester.
But here caribou is just taking the hammer to the Thor's hammer.
In fact, here in the second half.
85% of Caribous games were decided by ten or more points this year.
They have just put on an absolute display.
Cummins.
The Oracle still battle here, but daylight's fading on them.
Come in.
Stepped underneath.
Ducked in.
No second chance, no chance to shoot at the line Colby.
Well that probably was the closest Viking to you mentioned, Thor's hammer.
Do you know the name of Thor's hammer?
No, no.
Near.
The crossword puzzle clue.
But again, you see, they're finally getting some offensive rebounding going.
Cummins.
It's the first time.
That's good.
I learned something today.
Don't ask me to spell it.
This is a J in there somewhere.
You just mentioned Scrabble.
Crosswords.
And that's what they do.
If you could spell that and get on, like a triple letter tile, you'd be doing really good.
That was off of Sargent's foot, but he's got it back.
Stay with Cariboo.
Brayden up back in the contest.
Who started this game?
Hasn't played as much as normally because Kyle Corrigan has used that double big line up with Robinson.
Will that to a team.
I mean, just what it's done to take away everything on the inside but the rebounding, it gets them and then the speed in transition for Cariboo.
Oh.
Yeah.
His heel was on the sideline there.
The argument from Christian Robbins, he looked down said oops.
Well he tried to move his heel back and like look back there like, you know, revisionist history of the heel.
Under four to go here in the fourth quarter.
Cummins trying to work some magic won't fall.
There's brush on the rebound wristed out of there.
And that'll count for Lucas Bouchard.
Some hope for the Wildcats.
Well real opportunity here like you said.
But again just you know to continue to fight.
You know it looks like it's a big uphill battle here down 21.
But to start chipping away at this thing you still got a couple of timeouts.
But you've got to find a way to stop this Vikings transition.
If you're going to come up and press you've got to really change the tenor of the game.
And for some turnovers.
Bouchard at the line.
Won't fall for him.
The rebound the put back no.
And the story of the second half of the boys in white and Carolina blue hasn't it.
It just unlucky at the rim.
You know they've got good quality shots.
The field goal percentage down around 31% right now ten second call the whistle came after the ball went across the timeline.
But the call was being made first here.
But the fans don't like it.
Of course they're up 21.
I think their opinions will change in about 3.5 minutes.
If this holds, it won't care much about the officiating.
Less things radically change next three and a half.
If you're okay, you got your turnover, but it cost you 10s of clock to get it.
McDonald hits it, and that's what the Wildcats have needed.
And a long range bomb takes them back with an 18 is we.
He came in Sergeant.
Now the York bench team to go.
Oh is see Kobe Willette checking back in here.
Get some size in to help deal with this press.
That's the other thing.
They don't lose a lot of athleticism with that size and ball handling either.
Season eight of high school quiz show Maine returns on Thursday, March 20th.
Tune in to watch schools around the state match wits and compete for the $1,000 prize this season.
Schools from Orono to Fryeburg South will battle it out for the championship.
It all starts Thursday, March 20th at 8 p.m. on Maine Public Television.
Orono to Fryeburg to South Berwick.
It's kind of the same type of coverage on the map is caribou, New York.
You may be outside of a Madawaska Trait match matchup in class C. I can't think of two schools would be further apart area that could play for a gold ball.
Fort Fairfield would be, you know, fought for Corcoran meadow also had a Oscar.
Yeah.
Madawaska.
And, it was to Traip would have to be the match.
I'd be.
That'd be the one I getting anything else that would be further than that.
I think a small like, you know, private plane to do that, that trip.
Wildcats fans trying to encourage their team as they put the pressure on it.
They'll be a side out here as Ketchum knocks out of the media team a good job by Ketchum playing with his inside hand to tip that away, keeping himself in defensive position.
There.
Baseball pass to Sergeant Hill, wait for support.
Now he's backed into a corner and he stepped on the sideline.
So now you need to start piecing these turnovers and stops.
Are you're getting by York into points.
You need to start converting at the rim converting from outside behind the arc as it did last time.
That's exactly what McDonald will try at the last one.
Not this one.
Great effort to try to save that for the Wildcats.
A heavy thud from Lucas Bouchard.
He's okay.
Well, one thing you can do to, instead of trying to get it back with threes is attack some of those big guys.
They can't block everything, right?
Give yourself a chance to maybe score and get to the line.
A chance to attack on the third point on a traditional three point play with the clock.
Stop, Kobe will let inbounding the basketball that.
More pressure from the Wildcats desperately trying to get the ball back here.
But short work of Kobe.
What?
Can't believe it came in.
Sergeant shaking his head.
You want to talk about how many mistakes today for that man have there been?
No.
But you want to talk about how you beat a press diagonal tic tac toe pass.
Again, that inside pass got the two big men, Robbins and Willette, down low.
Easier said than done to try to feed it into the paint and looks.
Only nine points scored by Robin cities averaged over 17 throughout the regular season.
16 in the tournament.
But it's been other guys stepping up for the Vikings here today.
Tough shot.
Won't fall for Lynch.
The ball just finds him off the miss.
He's just everywhere today.
Well here's Will that.
Oh is rejected but not legally Lucas Bouchard got his money's worth Kobe will that will get a chance to make it from the line.
But Bouchard will make him earn it.
Coming in underneath like that.
Oh, that's a tough spot to be.
And in fairness to Bouchard two, he had the man much more vulnerable and didn't try to take him out.
He was going for the ball.
It's a it's a good hard basketball play.
Nothing malicious.
There will be will ET at the line.
The Vikings junior.
You'll get one more.
One.
Up rubbing hands.
Come back in now.
Get some speed and some quickness out there.
Well at patiently waiting.
He'll get his second shot now.
Foul call the shots going to count.
And here was going to get the ball right back.
Actually they'll shoot again.
That's foul.
Five foul five I think they're going to get Jack Joyce underneath here.
Your that's.
It.
But just in the rebound trying to get in.
It was Joyce on the foul Tristan.
Robin shooting.
Here.
One more.
Not anything the Vikings have to sweat about though.
Missing these free throws late and a different situation.
It might cause some nervousness for Kyle Corrigan but not now not when your lead is 20 points and there's just two and a half to go.
But, you know, York's going to still come at you.
You still got to compete hard here.
They're not going to give up.
No doubt that just Hanscom NCAA three doesn't fall on this Colby will that way up high for that rebound.
Oh nice hands on the sideline by Robbins.
Sargent's wouldn't fall for him Joyce blazing down the court Reese McDonald for three.
No Joyce put back no.
McDonald taking on Will Leitch and Will.
That stood his ground.
Oh, and Corrigan.
Belanger knows they don't need any more points.
Not there anyway.
This one though you'll take.
There's the cherry on top for the Vikings.
Oh really good job finding Sergeant underneath.
Just getting in your spread offense here to kill off the clock.
And now the curtain call for the Vikings.
Ten new players on the floor.
By the looks of things man Regan knew the game was up equal to starters and his subs over the scorers table.
And Kyle Corrigan seeing that the boss of the Vikings immediately followed suit.
Well, it's just a frustrating day for York because they've had tons of opportunities and just nothing is nothing done for them today.
They had great looks.
They're able to get it inside and just nothing doing for them.
It's just a tough day to have a bad day to shoot Alex Taylor in the game.
Now Parker Beauchamp and this is Taylor with a shot.
Doesn't fall.
The rebound will come down to Andrew Cummings Andrew Cummings Harrison Richards with it.
Now Tyson Sergeant also the go to Trombley out there.
Here's a three on the way too strong.
The rebound account for.
105 remaining Taylor Jack and one.
He's in the contest as well Alex Taylor courts right up bully his way underneath.
Did the hook shot woes go.
Got his own rebound.
What a battle by Kaelin Forbes the sophomore.
Well there's something you can build around in the future there.
Good size and length by Forbes battling hard and finishing.
Trey Font just picked the pocket of Andy Cummings, scored and.
Oh.
Timeout on the floor here with 38.6 seconds to go.
I like this time out a little bit here by Coach Corrigan as well.
You've got your guys out there.
The very easy to look up the scoreboard and think about what's coming next.
But he's thinking a little more long term here.
Coach the guys up.
Let's end this game the right way.
Let's finish this game the right way.
Just settle down and play.
And the Vikings have played to the tune of an 18 point lead.
Here is their man going with the jeopardy theme right now.
Thank you.
Up we are the champions swarm about 38.6 seconds.
The Hawks gonna care who has inbound the basketball.
And Declan Miller realizes that he's down there with Andrew Cummings.
Has deflected high the rebound to the Wildcats.
Oh Shane tried to go up with it.
Lost the handle.
It's grabbed by Declan Miller the caribou freshman putting on a dandy spin move by the baseline.
Back outside Miller 20s to go.
Miller.
He'll go to the line now a chance to get his first ever points here in Portland.
Good job by the freshman guard.
Getting underneath there going up strong.
His first on the.
Great moment for the freshman Declan Miller here.
If he does cash in one of these two and he does his first tournament point.
What a woman that's going to be to remember for the rookie.
A couple of big time memorable moments coming up for him here.
Not just his first tournament points but he's going to get a piece of nylon to go with that.
Here comes York 17 seconds to go.
Oh Shane hits it.
Great job of Parker machine.
Thanks to the flag down the Vikings with seven seconds to go.
They said the invasion would come from the north.
And it has one.
And ending Max Morrow for three.
And the Vikings have invaded Portland and pillaged their way to another gold ball.
Just an unbelievable job by them.
What a great defensive plan.
I mean, they they just were able to shut down Reese McDonald.
They dominated the inside part of the game.
And when it came to transition rebounds, that's really where caribou won this game today.
They were able to clean up the glass and get up the floor.
16 points for Landon Ballinger double double for him by my tally.
What a just complete performance here by these Caribou Vikings.
What a trip down south for the fans.
The girls won earlier they knocked off Biddeford in overtime.
But Vikings boys team though they spare the fans more suspense and more stress, they win this one going away, blowing open the game in the second half.
And there was really the middle part of the game too.
They only allowed 15 points in the second in the third quarter.
And that's you know, you take a look at the second quarter 14 to 8.
They won that quarter the caribou.
And then the third quarter the most critical quarter really in a game a tight game.
They won that quarter 19 to 7.
So a 23 to 15 run through the middle of the game.
This really blew this thing open for a 33 to 15 run through the middle of the game.
And here's the happy Vikings walking by the Golden Wall Declan Nolan you saw rubbing his hands.
He can't wait to pick it up at.
It's very enticing.
You've seen it out here.
Yes I mean they have it out here in Portland right from the get go.
And you know, it's hard to maintain focus and not peek over and see it.
But there it was here and.
This is what they worked hard all season for.
That's what you think about it nights after you're back home from practice.
It's what you dream about as a young player climbing that ladder the way that Colby Willette has getting out this year and claiming a souvenir.
I mean, just what's cool about this two, like in this moment is, you know, for the coaching, you know, for Kyle Corrigan and his staff is you just kind of absorb all this.
You take it all in.
You've spent a lot of time together.
Summer sessions.
You know, this started back before Thanksgiving.
It's a lot of time to spend together.
It's a lot of time to work together.
There's a lot of things that happened, the ups and downs throughout the course of a tournament, throughout the course of a season.
And this is the, you know, this is the moment that coaches remember a lot because you could just sit back.
You, you know, just looking over at Coach Corrigan and he's just taking it all in on the sideline.
You see the staff, the players watching as their teammates work on getting their own little pieces of, memorabilia that they're going to take with them for a very, very long time.
Saw Tristan Robbins a moment ago.
What a way to go out on his way to the University of Maine at Farmington next year.
Tremendous player for this Vikings team.
You hear them mention in the scoring there.
Yeah, you just mentioned Landon Belanger.
Yeah 16 points.
Declan Miller on one side cutting it down.
What do we got over here for the Vikings.
It's kind of a role reversal for Cariboo as they knocked off Orono 4140 in Kyle Corrigan said the head coach.
We had to grind that one out.
We didn't finish around the rim very well.
We didn't play great offensively.
We just had to grind.
This was a lot different, especially the second half.
They were tremendous around the rim.
Well, just peeking over at the stack computer here, I can give you a little, little spoiler alert 45% from the floor.
That is an absolutely tremendous job of shooting the basketball.
Whether they were able to get out in transition and get those layups.
And that's what York had done all tournament.
They entered this game shooting 46.3% from the floor.
Cariboo not much below that at 40%, but they saved their best shooting for last.
The Vikings did, and it paid off with this 21 point win.
As they work their way up there on the ladder with the scissors, Andrew Cummings.
Senior for them, he graduates going out on top.
How do they decide who gets to wave the year?
Coach spruce mountain I need decide who gets to wave the net.
Oh I think let the kids figure that out.
I'm sure they let that moment be.
But usually you're senior captains.
You've seen a couple of teams with these these big ladders.
You get a couple of kids up on there and kind of dual wield it.
But you know, you kind of, you know, seniority rank, you know, your freshman and sophomore junior and then the senior captains.
See them up there going to work.
What a game by that young man there Landon Belanger.
I see him up there.
What a job by him today.
And he's a junior.
He comes back next year.
Hit the big free throw to beat Orono in the regional final.
And he went out and had himself an absolute monster of an afternoon.
That's more I have a little trouble with this year.
Tristan Robbins starting to hack through it.
What a feeling.
Here's Landon Belanger.
Kind of symbolic this short.
He rose above everyone else here in this game today.
Top of the ladder and top of the basketball world here in the state of Maine.
Oh, you just wait for the other end to get done so you can get a coordinate.
The, the timing of this ought to be simultaneous, doesn't it?
Like you said, they get on top of the ladder, on top of the world, from the top of the state.
Here it is.
The celebration underway here in Portland.
Look at everybody celebrating up there.
Kobe will great minutes for them today in this game.
He was huge off the bench.
I don't think you can underscore just how important Cooley was to this caribou win today.
He was instrumental, especially his defense.
What he did defensively, as you see.
Getting more seniors in on this action.
There's a lot of juniors on this team, this caliber team.
It's not going anywhere.
I don't think that's Braden Brescia was up there a moment ago.
Dawson Saint Pierre who was outstanding in that game against Orono, Bresha getting the gold ball is a little retribution for him.
He was a shortstop in Caribous Class C North baseball champs.
Didn't take home the gold that day, but they are now.
Ladies and gentlemen, to.

The environment is just awesome.
Great campus, small close knit community.
Everyone's really welcoming.
Everything feels very personal.
Feel like you belong here.
Rob Kennedy and Jerry Richman, back with you one more time here in Portland.
We're going to send it down to our sideline man Greg Levinsky.
He is with the champs.
The caribou Vikings.
I'll have to wait for a second on that as they take a picture first.
I don't think Greg wants to dive into the picture and kind of be captured for posterity as a member of the Vikings, although it's very photogenic.
Wouldn't be a bad thing, I suppose.
No, I imagine they look at this picture.
They've got the girls team out here.
Oh, we get a double double up picture.
But, what a great day for the community of caribou.
And just the job that both their teams did.
Hats off to York, to the York boys.
Played hard, super hard.
Had a lot of great looks, really great seasons and careers from guys like Lucas Ketchum and Jack Joyce.
But just a hard luck finish.
You can't really see her in that shot.
She got eclipsed a little bit.
But Susan Collins wearing the maroon.
She's happy.
The graduate of Caribou High School.
She was down here in 2020 when they knocked off Marina Cook 7371, and a trip back down again.
And nobody's nobody's left the stands here from caribou A freeze this moment a little longer.
If you're a Viking or a Viking fan a long drive home, but a joyous ride up 95.
That's going to be a caravan and a half to watch as they hop on the interstate north.
That's four and a half.
Five hour drives may feel like 15 or 20 minutes with the euphoria of two gold balls, two champions heading back north South came in and Tyson Sergeant put on the 54 jerseys that they have as well honoring their cousin if he Sergeant okay let's send it down to Greg Lipinski.
Now he's with Kim the coach Kyle Corrigan coach.
It was a four point game at the half.
And then you go 39 one to start the second half.
What changed or what was the message to the locker room.
You know our guys are resilient.
They defend really hard.
We've said it all year.
Everybody talks about our offense.
But it's our defense that wins games.
It's our defense.
It's our defense.
It's our defense.
The guys bought into that and they made it really tough on them.
We finished every possession with the rebound and we got out and ran.
You know we got out and ran.
And that's when we're at our best is when we're running the floor.
And I'm just so proud of these guys for how they defended all tournament.
You know, that's the highest point total.
We've given up all tournament is 44.
So just really proud of them.
And it was the defense.
Defense wins championships, often sells the tickets.
But this was a defensive game for us to have the whole community here.
Both teams win.
What's a day like this mean for everyone involved?
Oh, this is incredible.
The way that our girls won two is special.
That that's a hard one to top.
And I'm so proud of the girls.
For for staying resilient as well.
You know, they could have folded at the end there they were down by a bit t they could have folded.
They were down by a bit, but they stayed with it.
They ended up getting big free throws.
And I'm going to shout out my niece Quinn right now for knocking those down.
I'm so proud of her.
And that was great.
Let's bring in Tristan Robbins here.
Obviously holding the Gold ball.
What are the emotions that go through your head when you when this buzzer sounds you have that ball in the net around your neck.
It just doesn't feel real.
It's been our dreams since very little little kids.
Obviously it's been buzzing around that we've been playing since we were in third grade.
It just feels like a dream come true.
Now tell me, what's this whole experience been like?
You come down the day before.
You know you're not traveling 20 minutes down the road.
What's it been like for you and your team, and how close has your bond even come further in this week?
I know it might sound crazy, but we love it and it's like a disadvantage.
But we it's like a chip on your shoulder.
We love coming down and traveling, proving that we get past these humps and we can play over it.
And the girls did it, too.
I mean, what a day for caribou.
What's it like for the community?
It feels great.
We have a great back in the seats for fall.
I don't think there's a single empty seat in the middle rows.
It just means the world to us.
Congratulations.
Thank you.
Thank you.
Back to you guys.
Thanks very much, Greg.
And we're going to step out because the double AA games we're getting going pretty soon a overtime game puts us back.
